Every VIN decoder on this site starts with the World Manufacturer Identifier, the first three characters of a standard 17-character VIN. The RZ page found that real RZ chassis numbers all begin with ZAR, Alfa Romeo’s standard export WMI. Rather than assume the SZ shares that prefix just because the two cars share a platform, we pulled real, documented SZ chassis numbers from RM Sotheby’s and Classic.com listings and checked. All three confirmed samples begin with ZAR too:

The WMI is confirmed, and so is something more specific: all three SZ samples share the identical 11-character prefix ZAR16200003 with every RZ chassis number the RZ page sampled, built from the WMI ZAR, the digits 162 (the same internal Alfa Romeo type code used on 75/Milano chassis numbers), and a constant block, 00003, that does not vary between the two models. Only the final six digits differ, and they differ in a telling way: our SZ samples run 000122, 000359, and 000440, while the RZ page’s samples ran 002117, 002149, and 002164. The SZ serials sit in a lower numeric block, the RZ serials in a higher one that does not overlap, consistent with a single factory numbering series shared across both models, SZ first, RZ picking up afterward. We cannot confirm that reading against an official production ledger, so treat it as an observation, not a documented fact.
One more parallel with the RZ page’s findings: the trailing digits don’t exactly match the build-order numbers auction catalogs quote from each car’s plaque. Car “095” carries VIN serial 000122; the “335th” car carries serial 000359; car “number 401” carries serial 000440. Each VIN serial runs a bit ahead of its quoted build number, by a similar margin across all three cars, suggesting the two sequences are related but offset rather than unrelated. Either way, don’t assume the VIN’s trailing digits are simply “the Nth car built.”
How to read an SZ chassis number, position by position
This section maps the SZ’s 17-character chassis number onto the standard ISO 3779 position layout used across this site, since that’s the framework anyone comparing cars will expect. Treat it as a structural guide, not a working decode. We ran a sampled SZ chassis number through NHTSA’s vPIC decoder and it fails in the same specific ways the RZ page documented for that car’s numbers.
Positions 1-3: WMI. ZAR on every genuine SZ we sampled, matching Alfa Romeo’s standard export WMI (Z for Italy, AR for Alfa Romeo) and identical to the RZ and the export Milano.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS). All three samples read 16200 here, with no variation, exactly matching the RZ’s VDS block, consistent with a fixed internal type/model code applied across the shared SZ/RZ chassis-number series rather than a field that varies by trim.
Position 9: Check digit. On a compliant modern VIN this character is calculated from the other sixteen using SAE’s modulo-11 formula. Running ZAR16200003000440 through NHTSA’s vPIC decoder returns “Check Digit (9th position) does not calculate properly,” the same failure the RZ page documented, so don’t use this position to validate an SZ number.
Position 10: Model year. If the SZ followed the standard ISO 3779 30-year cycle used elsewhere on this site, the applicable letters for its 1989-1991 production span would be:

I, O, and Q are skipped industry-wide because they can be misread as 1 and 0. That table is the standard reference framework, but it does not describe the real cars: every sampled SZ chassis number carries the digit 0 in this position, exactly as the RZ page found, and NHTSA’s decoder flags that value as an invalid model-year code. An SZ’s actual model year has to come from its Certificato di Collaudo, an Alfa Romeo Automobilismo Storico certificate, or auction documentation, not from position 10.
Position 11: Assembly plant. All three sampled chassis numbers carry the digit 3 here, again matching the RZ. We cannot confirm what this was meant to encode, since the SZ never ran on an Alfa Romeo assembly line with a standard plant code; every SZ was built entirely at Zagato’s own Terrazzano di Rho works near Milan, the same facility that later built the RZ. NHTSA’s decoder guesses a plant city of Pomigliano, a real Alfa Romeo factory near Naples with nothing to do with either Zagato-built car, so treat that value as a generic database default.
Positions 12-17: Serial number. The one block that meaningfully varies between real cars. Across our three samples it read 000122, 000359, and 000440, tracking roughly with each car’s position in the approximately 1,036-unit production run, though not matching the specific build-order numbers quoted from each car’s own plaque.
