The 146 was never federalized for the US market. First, real listings for actual cars carry VINs beginning ZAR93000: a 1998 146 Junior, VIN ZAR93000002162676, and a 1999 145 Cloverleaf, VIN ZAR93000002211191, both from European auction listings. Second, running those VINs through the NHTSA vPIC decoder (the same public database this site uses for US-market vehicles) returns “ALFA ROMEO S.P.A.” as the manufacturer for the ZAR prefix, confirming NHTSA has the WMI on file even though it holds no further data on the vehicle.
We are not listing additional WMIs beyond ZAR, because we could not verify any others against an actual VIN. Some general references mention other historical prefixes, but repeating those without a real 146 VIN to back them up would be a guess, and this page does not guess.
How to read a VIN: position by position
The 17-character VIN follows the international ISO 3779 standard in theory. In practice, a European-market 146 does not fill in every position the way a car built for the US market would, and this page stays upfront about that rather than paper over it with an invented table.
Positions 1-3: WMI

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
On both real 146 and 145 VINs we found, positions 4-8 read 93000. The “930” is the shared Type 930 platform code Alfa Romeo used internally for both cars (the 146’s full designation is 930B, though that suffix doesn’t appear as a literal VIN character). The trailing “00” looks like filler rather than an encoded body-style or engine indicator. This matters: the block was identical across both cars, so the VDS here does not reliably distinguish a 145 from a 146, or one engine from another. NHTSA’s decoder flagged positions 4 through 8 as “unused” for the same reason. To confirm engine or body style, use the registration document, build plate, or a marque specialist rather than the VIN alone.
Position 9: Check digit
In North America, position 9 is a mathematically calculated check digit required by federal regulation (49 CFR 565), used to catch transcription errors. Alfa Romeo’s Italian-market 146 was never built to that regulation. In both real VINs we examined, position 9 reads 0, and NHTSA’s decoder confirms the check digit “does not calculate properly,” exactly what you’d expect from a car never required to carry one. Do not assume a 146 VIN’s 9th character validates against the standard formula. It generally will not.
Position 10: Model year
This is the position where honesty matters most. Under the SAE/ISO 30-year cyclic scheme used for North American vehicles, position 10 is a single letter or digit mapped to model year. For completeness, here is the standard ISO 3779 table for the years the 146 was built:

Here is the honest catch: in both real VINs we found, position 10 reads 0, not a letter from the table above. NHTSA’s decoder flags this explicitly, returning error 11, “Incorrect Model Year – Position 10 does not match valid model year codes.” That is not a data-entry mistake in the listings; it is what Alfa Romeo actually stamped into the VIN. European manufacturers of this era were not bound by the US model-year-letter convention (a US federal requirement, not part of ISO 3779 itself), and Pomigliano d’Arco did not appear to use this position for model year the way the standard describes. Confirm the year from the registration document, the build/data plate, or a marque specialist instead.
Position 11: Assembly plant
Both real VINs we examined carry the digit 2 in position 11. Every 146 was built at a single plant, Pomigliano d’Arco, so a consistent plant character is expected, though we cannot confirm from an official Alfa Romeo source that “2” specifically means Pomigliano d’Arco (Alfa never published a public plant-code table for this era). Treat “2” as an observed pattern rather than a documented, confirmed code.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the sequential production number: 162676 and 211191 in our two examples, each unique to that car. Combined with the WMI and VDS, this is what makes each 146 VIN unique, even though the middle carries less model-specific information than a US-market car of the same era would.
Where to find the VIN
On a 146, the chassis number is stamped, not just printed on a sticker:
- Embossed on the right-hand front strut top, under the hood/bonnet, near the front suspension turret
- Stamped on a plate visible through the windscreen on later production, though this was not universal on 146s
