A note on the facelift: some sources date the restyled car to 2004, others to 2005, and both are correct. Alfa Romeo unveiled the update in 2004 and it reached showrooms in early 2005. How to read an Alfa Romeo 147 VIN, position by position

The 147 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 VIN format, the international standard used worldwide. Here is what we could actually verify on real cars, position by position, and where the trail runs out.

Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

ZAR on every confirmed 147 VIN. Z marks the country of manufacture as Italy, A narrows it to the Fiat/Alfa Romeo group, and R identifies Alfa Romeo passenger cars. This is the same WMI used on the modern, US-market Giulia and Stelvio, since it identifies the brand and country, not the specific model.

Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This is where things get honest rather than tidy. Every real 147 VIN we located, spanning a 2000 launch-year 2.0 TS Selespeed, a 2003 GTA with the 3.2 V6, and 2005 and 2010 JTD diesels, reads the identical five characters here: 93700. Positions 4 to 6 (937) form the Type 937 chassis code shared by the whole model, and positions 7 and 8 read 00 on every sample, regardless of engine, trim, or body style.

That means we cannot hand you a verified table mapping VDS characters to engine codes the way you might expect from a US-market VIN, since the VDS block does not vary with engine or trim on any real chassis number we checked. If a source elsewhere claims position 7 or 8 distinguishes the 1.9 JTD from the 3.2 V6 GTA, treat it skeptically; it did not match anything we found on an actual decoded car.

Position 9: Check digit, in theory

On a US-market VIN, position 9 is a computed checksum run through a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math, defined by FMVSS 565 to catch typos. On every real 147 VIN we found, this position reads 0, regardless of build year. We ran one of these VINs through NHTSA’s official vPIC decoder to check our work, and it flagged the discrepancy directly: “Check Digit (9th position) does not calculate properly.” That is expected, since the 147 was never certified for US sale and was never built to the FMVSS 565 check-digit rule. ISO 3779 itself does not require one.

Position 10: Model year, in theory and in practice

Now the honest part: none of the real 147 VINs we found use this table. Every example we checked, from a car built in April 2000 to one built in May 2010, shows 0 at position 10, which is not a valid character in the table above. NHTSA’s vPIC decoder confirms it on the VIN we tested, flagging “Incorrect Model Year – Position 10 does not match valid model year codes.” In practice, Alfa Romeo’s European chassis numbers for the 147 do not encode model year at position 10 at all. For the exact year, use the registration document (libretto di circolazione), a dealer build record, or the first-registration date on the paperwork instead.

Position 11: Assembly plant, in theory and in practice

The 147 had only one assembly plant for its entire run, Pomigliano d’Arco, so there was never a second plant for position 11 to distinguish between. In our real-world samples, this position was not fixed to a single character either; it varied between 3 and 5, which lines up with what position 9 and 10 already told us. Rather than force a plant-code table that would be fiction, we will say plainly: every 147 came from Pomigliano d’Arco, and position 11 on this car reads as part of the production number, not a coded plant identifier.

Positions 12 to 17: Serial number

On a US-market VIN this block is a fixed six-digit production sequence. On the real 147 VINs we examined, the meaningful digits actually run from around position 11 through 17, an eight-digit production count (for example, 05000001 on an early 2000 car and 03470450 on one of the last cars built in May 2010). Whichever way you slice the last several characters, they are what makes each 147 unique.
