How to read an Alfa Romeo 145 VIN: position by position

The 145 was built under the 17-character ISO 3779 standard, the same format used worldwide, though not every position behaves the way it does on a US-market car.

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

ZAR on every VIN we confirmed. Z marks Italy as the country of manufacture under the ISO 3780 country-code table, and AR narrows the WMI to Alfa Romeo. This confirms Italian Alfa Romeo manufacture; the plant itself, covered below, was Pomigliano d’Arco on every 145 built.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This block is supposed to encode body style, restraint system, and engine. Here is what we can confirm rather than guess: all three real VINs we located, a 1997 Cloverleaf, a 1999 Cloverleaf, and a 2000 Quadrifoglio, carry the identical string 93000 at positions 4 through 8. That “93” most likely echoes the car’s own Tipo 930 designation, matching what Italian mechanic references say about Alfa chassis numbers of this era. Alfa Romeo never published a VDS key for the 145, and with only three samples sharing the same string, we can’t say whether it varies by engine or fuel type, or between the 145 and the related 146. We’re reporting what held true across every genuine VIN checked, nothing more.

Position 9: Check digit

On US-market VINs, position 9 is a mandatory check digit, computed from the other 16 characters with SAE J853’s modulo-11 formula, catching a mistyped or altered character through math alone. EU type approval under ISO 3779 doesn’t require that same formula, and we confirmed the difference directly: both full 145 VINs we ran through NHTSA’s vPIC decoder came back with an explicit “Check Digit (9th position) does not calculate properly” error, despite being real, verifiable VINs from legitimate listings. Position 10: Model year

This is the position where we want to be direct about a real limitation rather than hand you a clean table and hope it holds up. The standard ISO/SAE 30-year cycle for this window reads as follows, with every year from 1994 through 2001 covered and no gaps:

I, O, and Q are never used in this cycle, in any year, because they can be misread as 1 and 0.
That table is the correct global standard, but it’s not what we found in practice. Both full VINs we decoded, one from a genuine 1997 car and one from a genuine 1999 car, carry the character 0 at position 10, and 0 doesn’t appear anywhere in the cycle above. NHTSA’s vPIC decoder flags this on both: “Incorrect Model Year – Position 10 does not match valid model year codes (I, O, Q, U, Z, 0).” Position 10 wasn’t encoding model year at all on either real VIN; it looks like a fixed character in the “9300000” block described above rather than a variable one. We’re showing the standard table as the correct ISO reference, but can’t confirm it applies here. Confirm the build year against the Italian libretto or your country’s equivalent instead.

Position 11: Assembly plant

Every 145 came from a single factory, Pomigliano d’Arco in Campania, Italy, so there’s no multi-plant table to build here. NHTSA’s vPIC decoder confirmed this directly, returning “NAPLES” as Plant City and “CAMPANIA” as Plant State on one of our real VINs. Oddly, the position-11 character itself wasn’t identical between our two full VINs (one reads 2, the other 4), even though both cars came from the same plant. We don’t have enough samples, or a published Fiat/Alfa key, to say what that character tracks, so rather than guess at a table, we’re confirming the one verifiable fact: every 145 was built at Pomigliano d’Arco, full stop.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six characters are the sequential production number assigned to your specific car, making each 145 VIN unique, even between two Quadrifoglios built the same month with identical engines and trim.
