Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where body, engine, and restraint data live, but Audi doesn’t isolate the engine to one clean digit; real decoded VINs show positions 4-8 moving together as a block, best read as a whole.

Notice that positions 4-5 vary between “HC,” “GB,” and “HE” across otherwise similar sedans and wagons, while positions 6-8 don’t cleanly isolate turbo from naturally aspirated, or quattro from front-wheel drive, on their own. Position 9: Check digit
Calculated from the other 16 characters using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math, the check digit catches typos. Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on the industry-wide 30-year cycle defined by ISO 3779. Scoped to the years an Audi 100, 5000, or 200 with a full 17-character VIN could have left the factory:
