About the Audi 5000
The “5000” nameplate covers two European generations, both built at Audi’s Neckarsulm plant (with some Avant wagon production also at Ingolstadt), sold in the US only as four- and five-cylinder cars:

The C2, launched in the US for 1978, replaced the original Audi 100 (C1) and used angular, Giugiaro-influenced styling with four- and five-cylinder gas engines. The 5000 Turbo joined the lineup for 1980, Audi’s first turbocharged mainstream sedan sold in the US.
The C3 arrived for 1983 and was more than a facelift. Its smooth, flush-glazed body reached a drag coefficient of just 0.30, a record for a production sedan at the time, and Audi marketed it heavily as proof that aerodynamics, not just horsepower, could cut fuel use and wind noise. A diesel and turbodiesel joined for 1983, an Avant wagon followed mid-decade, and Audi brought quattro all-wheel drive, already proven in the Audi Quattro rally coupe and the smaller 4000, to the 5000 as the 5000S quattro and, later, the range-topping 5000CS Turbo quattro. Those two are the performance flagships of the era: turbocharged five-cylinder power through permanent all-wheel drive in a mainstream-looking family sedan, years ahead of anything comparable in the segment.
For 1989, Audi dropped “5000” entirely and reverted to the European “Audi 100” and “Audi 200” badges. That switch is covered in detail below; it was a direct response to the controversy that defines this car’s American reputation.
The 1986 unintended acceleration controversy
On November 23, 1986, CBS’s “60 Minutes” aired a segment called “Out of Control,” built around interviews with Audi 5000 owners who had sued the company after crashes they attributed to sudden, unrequested acceleration, often while shifting into gear. It included footage that appeared to show a 5000 lurching forward under power with the brake pedal depressed. It became one of the most consequential pieces of automotive journalism in US history and did lasting damage to Audi’s American business.
It later came out that the demonstration in that footage was not a spontaneous mechanical failure. Investigators found the car used in the segment had a hole drilled into its transmission case with a canister of compressed air rigged to force fluid into the valve body and simulate a wide-open-throttle surge, a setup unrelated to how the car normally operated. CBS did not retract the segment; it characterized later findings that undercut it as merely “an opinion.”
NHTSA had already opened a formal investigation on August 15, 1986, months before the broadcast, following a rising volume of complaints and two prior Audi recalls (1982 and 1983) tied to acceleration incidents. Agency engineers tested cruise control, electronic idle control, brakes, and automatic transmissions and could not reproduce a defect capable of causing an unrequested wide-open-throttle event. NHTSA’s final report, published in 1989, concluded pedal misapplication (the driver pressing the accelerator while believing it was the brake) was the most probable explanation in the large majority of reported incidents, including those featured on “60 Minutes.” The agency noted the accelerator and brake pedals on these Audis sat closer together than was typical on American cars, which it believed made that mistake easier, particularly for drivers unfamiliar with the car. NHTSA closed the investigation on July 11, 1989, without finding a defect that caused the wide-open-throttle events themselves.
That is not the same as saying nothing was wrong. Two narrower defects did lead to federal recalls. Campaign 87V008000 covered 5000s built between August 1977 and July 1986, addressing the risk of the car moving unexpectedly if shifted directly from Park into Reverse or Drive; the remedy added a shift-lock interlock requiring the brake pedal be depressed before the lever could leave Park. Campaign 87V009000 covered idle-stabilizer valves on 1985 5000s built between August 1984 and April 1986, where a worn valve could cause an idle “surge,” fixed by replacement. Neither recall addressed a mechanism capable of sustained wide-open-throttle acceleration; both were narrower fixes, not evidence against NHTSA’s broader conclusion.
The commercial fallout was severe regardless of the final report. Audi 5000 sales fell from 47,766 units in 1985 to 40,107 in 1986, the year the segment aired, then 25,943 in 1987 and just 7,251 in 1988. Total Audi US sales, which had reached 74,061 in 1985, would not recover for decades; by 1991 Audi sold barely more than 12,000 cars in the entire country. Facing a nameplate now synonymous with scandal, regardless of what investigators concluded caused it, Audi announced in 1987 it would retire “5000” in the US, and starting with the 1989 model year the car reverted to the “Audi 100” and “Audi 200” names it already carried everywhere else. Audi 5000 WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO. Every 1981-and-later Audi 5000 VIN we decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC database, across both plants and all body styles, carried the same WMI:

How to read a VIN: position by position
Every Audi 5000 built for the 1981 model year onward uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard that the US and Canada adopted industry-wide starting that year.
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. WAU identifies a German-built Audi passenger car; it does not by itself distinguish Neckarsulm from Ingolstadt production, which is instead encoded at position 11.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This block carries body, engine, and restraint data, but Audi did not use one single clean “engine letter” the way some manufacturers do. Rather than guess, here is what we found by decoding real, verified 5000 VINs spanning the C3 generation:

Positions 4 to 6 shift with engine and drivetrain (compare the diesel GG0/GH0 blocks against the turbo quattro HE044/EE044 blocks), while positions 7 to 8 stay closer to a fixed body-code pair within a run. A decoder needs the whole VDS block plus Audi’s build data, not one digit, to return “5000CS Turbo quattro” instead of just “Audi sedan.” US engines across the run: 1.6 to 2.2-liter inline-fours and inline-fives on gas, a turbo five on Turbo models, and naturally aspirated and turbocharged five-cylinder diesels. quattro, when fitted, ran through the 2.2-liter turbo five.
Position 9: Check digit
The ninth character is calculated from the other sixteen using fixed ISO weighting and modulo-11 math. Every VIN referenced on this page decoded clean against that check. Mistype one character anywhere and this digit no longer matches, which is why it catches most transcription errors before a decoder, a DMV, or an insurer looks at the rest of the string.
Position 10: Model year
The tenth character maps to model year on the industry-wide 30-year cycle. Scoped to the years the Audi 5000 was actually sold in the US:

I, O, and Q are never used here, too easily confused with 1 and 0. Because the cycle repeats every 30 years, a B, D, or J alone is ambiguous, but combined with the WAU WMI and 5000-era body styles there is no real-world confusion for a car this old.
Before 1981, the US had not yet mandated the 17-character standard, and Audi used its own internal chassis-numbering format instead. Genuine 1978 to 1980 5000 chassis numbers found in period sale records look like 43A0079842: a run of digits led by the internal Typ 43 designation, not a WMI, VDS, or standardized year character. Neckarsulm was the primary home of the 5000/100 line and later became the birthplace of the Audi A6; the plant code confirms that lineage directly in the VIN.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the sequential production number for that car as it came off the line, making every post-1980 5000 VIN globally unique, even between two cars built the same week with the same engine and body style.
Where to find the VIN
- Lower-left windshield corner, visible from outside the car (required on 1981-and-later models; not universal on earlier ones)
- Driver’s side door jamb or pillar, on a data plate listing the VIN, paint code, and factory options
- Stamped into the firewall/bulkhead in the engine bay
- Vehicle title, registration, and any surviving factory build sheet
On a car this old, cross-check all three locations against each other and the title. Decades of resprays, parts swapping, and wear make mismatches more common on 1980s cars than on anything newer.

Beyond the shift-lock interlock (87V008000) and idle-stabilizer valve (87V009000) recalls discussed above, the 5000 was subject to earlier acceleration-related service actions in 1982 and 1983, plus routine recalls covering other systems across its run.

How do I tell a C2 from a C3 Audi 5000 by VIN?
Model year does most of the work: 1978 through 1982 is C2 (boxy sedan only; 1978-1980 use pre-standard chassis numbers, not a 17-character VIN); 1983 through 1988 is C3 (rounder body, Avant wagon added partway through).
