About the Audi 4000

The Audi 80 was redesigned onto the B2 platform in Europe for 1978 and reached North American showrooms for model year 1980, replacing the smaller Audi Fox (the US name for the earlier B1-generation 80). Audi’s US arm was mid numeric-badge phase at the time: the Audi 100 had already become the “Audi 5000” for 1978, and the 80 followed suit as the “Audi 4000.” The name lasted exactly as long as this one generation. When the B3-generation 80 arrived for 1988, Audi USA dropped the numeric badges and sold it as the “Audi 80” and “Audi 90,” the same names Europe had used all along.

The 4000 quattro is the model most worth knowing. Audi had launched quattro all-wheel drive on the turbocharged, low-volume Ur-Quattro coupe for 1980, a car that cost roughly twice what a 4000 did. Bringing quattro to the compact 4000 sedan for 1983-1984, using a naturally aspirated version of the 2.2L five-cylinder rather than the coupe’s turbo engine, put genuine AWD traction into an affordable, everyday sedan years before AWD was common in the US market. US sales were modest, commonly cited around a few hundred units a year, but the car is widely credited with establishing Audi’s AWD reputation in North America ahead of the volume quattro would eventually do across the whole lineup.

Audi 4000 WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. We ran real 4000 VINs, pulled from period auction and marketplace listings spanning 1981 through 1987, through NHTSA’s vPIC decoder to confirm this directly rather than assume it:

How to read a VIN: position by position

The Audi 4000’s US production run straddles the exact date the federal 17-character VIN standard took effect. FMVSS 115 mandated the 17-character format starting with vehicles built on or after September 1, 1980, which lines up with the 1981 model year for most manufacturers, Audi included. That means true 1980 model-year 4000s, and any very early 1981s built before the cutover, can carry a shorter, pre-standard chassis number rather than the 17-character format below. Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. Position 1 identifies the country of assembly, not Audi’s corporate headquarters, though for the 4000 that distinction never mattered in practice: it was built in Germany throughout the run.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This is where the factory encodes body and engine data, though it doesn’t map as cleanly as it does on later, computerized-era Audis. Here’s what the VDS actually read on every real 4000 VIN we decoded:

A pattern is visible (every CS or quattro VIN we pulled ends 085, the one plain “S sedan” we pulled ends 081), but it’s not one we’ll assert as a hard rule from six examples. NHTSA’s vPIC decode itself returns a generic five-cylinder, 100 hp reading for most of these regardless of whether the listing describes a 1.8L four or a 2.2L five, which tells you something useful: for a pre-OBD car like the 4000, the government’s decode table lacks the granularity Audi’s dealer network had. For a firm engine ID, cross-reference the VDS against a build sheet rather than reading it off position 8 alone.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is calculated from the other 16 characters using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math, and it’s the one character that catches typos. Every VIN used in this guide decoded clean through vPIC (“Check Digit (9th position) is correct”); a single mistyped character anywhere in the string breaks the math, and any compliant decoder or DMV will reject the entry.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on the industry-wide 30-year cycle. Scoped to the Audi 4000’s 1980-1987 US run:

I, O, and Q are never used in this position, since they’re easily confused with 1 and 0, though none would otherwise fall between A and H anyway. We couldn’t turn up a checksum-valid, 17-character 1980 or 1982-1983 VIN in period listings to decode directly, so those two rows carry the standard cycle value without a real-world example attached here; nothing about the WMI, plant codes, or engine data above was extended past what we could actually confirm.

Position 11: Assembly plant

A single character narrows the VIN to a specific factory. This is one of the more interesting confirmed findings on this page, since it isn’t the single-plant story you’d expect from a nameplate usually described as simply “built in Ingolstadt”:

Every 1984-and-later VIN we decoded returned Ingolstadt. Both 1981 VINs we decoded, base and 5+5, returned Emden, a VW Group plant that also built the contemporary Passat/Dasher on shared underpinnings. We’re not extending this into a general claim about which years used which plant; it’s exactly what the two batches of real VINs showed, no more.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence stamped on that specific car as it left the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes the full 17-character string unique to one 4000.

Where to find the VIN on an Audi 4000

The windshield and door jamb are fastest to check on a used-car lot or at a show. The firewall stamp, physically part of the body shell, is the one to check against the other two if you suspect a car has been re-tagged, a real possibility on a 40-plus-year-old car that’s changed hands repeatedly. If the car predates the September 1980 VIN mandate, the windshield tag may not be present at all; check the door jamb and title first.
