The Audi 200 was the performance and luxury-trim sibling of the Audi 100, built on the same C2 and C3 platforms but wearing turbocharged engines and richer equipment. It reached US buyers from the 1989 through 1991 model years, and the last of them, the 200 Turbo Quattro 20V, is one of the earliest quattro all-wheel-drive luxury sedans sold in America, with a 220-horsepower 20-valve five-cylinder that made it the fastest sedan Audi offered at the time. Below you will find verified WMI and plant codes pulled from real production VINs, a position-by-position guide, an honest look at the “5000 versus 200” naming history, and where to find the VIN on the car itself.
About the Audi 200
Audi introduced the 200 in Europe in 1979 as the upmarket variant of the C2-generation 100 (internal type code Typ 43), pairing the same body with a five-cylinder engine tuned for more power and, from 1979, a turbocharged option. That C2-era 200 was never sold in North America; US buyers got the same underlying car badged “Audi 5000,” a naming choice that stuck through the 1988 model year.
When the C3 generation replaced the C2 for 1983 (Typ 44, the same aerodynamic shape that also underpinned the North American Audi 5000 and Audi 100), the 200 nameplate carried over in Europe as the turbocharged, higher-trim C3 variant. The US market kept calling its equivalent car “Audi 5000,” with sportier versions marketed as the 5000S and 5000CS Turbo Quattro. That changed for 1989: after the well-publicized 60 Minutes report on unintended acceleration damaged the 5000’s reputation, Audi renamed the US lineup to match the rest of the world, and the “100” and “200” badges finally appeared on American cars.
| Generation | Type code | Years (Europe) | 200 badge in US | Body styles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C2 | Typ 43 | 1979-1982 | Not sold; badged Audi 5000 in the US | Sedan, Avant |
| C3 | Typ 44 | 1983-1991 | 1983-1988 badged Audi 5000/5000S/5000CS Turbo Quattro in the US; 1989-1991 badged Audi 200 | Sedan, Avant |
The final and most significant version is the 200 Turbo Quattro 20V, sold in the US for the 1989 through 1991 model years. It paired a 2.2-liter turbocharged, intercooled inline-five with a 20-valve cylinder head (four valves per cylinder) making 220 PS (217 hp SAE), quattro permanent all-wheel drive, and Audi’s largest brakes to date. It was one of the first genuinely quick, all-wheel-drive luxury sedans sold in America, arriving years before rivals like the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class offered anything comparable, and it remains the car most people mean when they search for an Audi 200 today.
Because the 200 and 100 share a platform, WMI, plant, and VIN structure almost entirely, this guide cross-references our Audi 100 VIN decoder throughout. If your VIN decodes to “Audi 100” instead of “200,” or if your title reads “Audi 5000,” you are almost certainly looking at the same generation of car with a lower trim level or an earlier model year.
Audi 200 WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. This is the only WMI we found on real, US-titled Audi 200 and its 5000-badged predecessor across a dozen production VINs decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC database:
| WMI | Country | Vehicle type | Confirmed years |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAU | Germany | Audi 200 / 5000 sedan and Avant | 1986-1991 (5000 badge 1986-1988, 200 badge 1989-1991) |
Every VIN we pulled from Bring a Trailer, Cars & Bids, and Classic.com listings for the US-market 5000 and 200, then checked against NHTSA’s decoder, came back clean with WAU. Treat any VIN claiming to be an Audi 200 that starts with something else as suspect, and confirm with the decoder above before trusting the title.
How to decode an Audi 200 VIN, position by position
Every US-market Audi 200, and its Audi 5000 predecessor from the 1981 model year forward, uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard.
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. Position 1 identifies the assembly country, not Audi’s headquarters. Every 200 and 5000 we verified came from a single German WMI; unlike some later Audi models, the 200 was never assembled outside Germany.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where Audi encodes body style, engine, and trim, though not with one single clean “engine code” digit. We decoded a dozen real 5000 and 200 VINs from 1986 through 1991 and the pattern held:
| Model year | VDS (positions 4-8) | Car / engine | Real VIN decoded |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1986 | HE044 | 5000 CS Turbo Quattro sedan, 2.2L turbo I5 | WAUHE0441GN036212 |
| 1987 | HE044 | 5000CS Turbo Quattro sedan | WAUHE0441HN096587 |
| 1987 | FB044 | 5000S sedan, 5-speed | WAUFB0449HN001175 |
| 1988 | HE044 | 5000CS Turbo Quattro sedan | WAUHE0447JN018207 |
| 1988 | EE044 | 5000 CD Turbo Quattro Avant | WAUEE0441JN023471 |
| 1988 | EE044 | 5000 CS sedan | WAUEE0445JN019875 |
| 1989 | GC544 | 200 Quattro Turbo sedan | WAUGC5445KN055238 |
| 1990 | GD544 | 200 Quattro Turbo sedan | WAUGD5445LN025428 |
| 1990 | GD544 | 200 Turbo Quattro sedan | WAUGD5444LN043564 |
| 1991 | GE544 | 200 Turbo Quattro 20V sedan | WAUGE544XMN013029 |
| 1991 | HE544 | 200 Quattro Avant Turbo | WAUHE5443MN018786 |
| 1991 | HE544 | 200 Avant Quattro Turbo, 5-speed | WAUHE5441MN021847 |
The pattern: position 4 tracks body style (G on sedans, H on Avant wagons in this window; E and F on the older 5000-badged cars), while position 5 shifts by model year to reflect running changes to the same body/engine combination. NHTSA’s vPIC data does not decode full engine displacement or trim on most of these pre-OBD cars, so positions 4-8 remain the best way to distinguish sedan from Avant and Turbo Quattro from the naturally aspirated 5000S.
Position 9: Check digit
Calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math, the check digit catches typos. Every VIN in the table above decoded clean against NHTSA; a single mistyped character anywhere breaks the math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it. The check digit can be a number 0 through 9, or the letter X representing the value 10, as seen in WAUGE544XMN013029 above.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on the industry-wide, repeating 30-year ISO 3779 cycle. Scoped to the years the US saw this platform, badged either Audi 5000 or Audi 200:
| Char | Year | Char | Year | Char | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| B | 1981 | F | 1985 | K | 1989 |
| C | 1982 | G | 1986 | L | 1990 |
| D | 1983 | H | 1987 | M | 1991 |
| E | 1984 | J | 1988 |
We confirmed G through M (1986 through 1991) directly against NHTSA using the real production VINs in the table above. B through F (1981 through 1985) follow the same universal ISO 3779 cipher used across the entire industry in this period; we found no evidence of an Audi-specific deviation, and the letters I, O, and Q are skipped throughout because they can be confused with 1 and 0. Remember that “Audi 200” as a US badge only applies to K, L, and M (1989-1991); a B through J car from this same platform lineage was sold here as an Audi 5000, 5000S, or 5000CS/CD Turbo Quattro.
Position 11: Assembly plant
A single character identifies the specific factory. Every VIN we verified, spanning both the 5000-badged and 200-badged years, came from the same plant:
| Char | Plant | Confirmed on |
|---|---|---|
| N | Neckarsulm, Germany | 5000 and 200, sedan and Avant, 1986-1991 |
This matches Audi’s own production history: the C3-generation 100/200 (1983-1991) was built exclusively at Neckarsulm. The earlier C2-generation 200 (1979-1982, Europe only) is documented as having used both Neckarsulm and Ingolstadt, but since that car was never sold in the US and we could not source a checksum-valid, US-titled VIN from that era, we are not including an unverified entry for it here. Audi Tradition, the factory historical archive, is the authoritative source for a European-market C2 200.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence stamped on your specific car as it left the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every 200 VIN globally unique.
Pre-1981 chassis numbers: the C2-era 200 and 5000
The 17-character VIN did not become mandatory in the US until the 1981 model year. Audi 5000s (the US name for the C2-generation 100, and the closest thing to a “200” that Americans could buy) built for the 1978 through 1980 model years carry a shorter, manufacturer-specific chassis number instead, typically 9 to 13 characters, with no standardized check digit and no ISO 3779 position meanings. These numbers are not decodable by NHTSA’s vPIC or by any modern VIN decoder, including this one, because they predate the standard those tools are built around.
Do not trust a decoder that returns confident-sounding results for a sub-17-character number; treat those as unverifiable. Our classic car VIN decoder guide explains how pre-standardization numbering worked across manufacturers, and Audi Tradition or a marque specialist club can often trace a pre-1981 chassis number against factory build records.
Where to find the VIN on an Audi 200
- Lower-left corner of the windshield, visible from outside the car (federally required from the 1981 model year onward)
- Driver’s side door jamb, on the Audi data sticker alongside the paint code and equipment codes
- Stamped on the engine bay firewall/bulkhead
- Vehicle title, registration, and any surviving factory build sheet
The windshield and door jamb stickers are the fastest to check on a used-car lot or at a show. The firewall stamp is physically part of the body shell, so it is the one to check if you suspect the windshield or door jamb labels were swapped, which matters more on a 30-plus-year-old collector car than on something newer.
Check recalls and safety information
To check your specific Audi 200 for open recalls:
- Decode the VIN with the tool above to confirm the exact model year and drivetrain (quattro versus front-wheel drive)
- Cross-reference the 17-character VIN with NHTSA’s recall database
- Contact an Audi service center or an independent Audi specialist for any open campaign repair, since many dealerships no longer stock parts or service records for a car this old
Recall repairs are free of charge regardless of vehicle age, mileage, or ownership history, though on a car this old you may need to work through an independent Audi specialist rather than a franchise dealer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I decode an Audi 200 VIN?
Type the 17-character VIN from the windshield, door jamb, or title into the decoder at the top of this page. Results return in seconds and include model year, engine, drivetrain, plant of origin, and open NHTSA recalls. No sign-up required.
What is the difference between the Audi 100 and the Audi 200?
They share the same C2 and C3 platform, body, and VIN structure. The 200 was Audi’s higher-trim, turbocharged sibling: more standard equipment, a turbocharged five-cylinder instead of the 100’s naturally aspirated engine, and, in its final 20V form, 220 horsepower versus roughly 130 to 172 for the contemporary 100. See our Audi 100 VIN decoder for the base-model side of the same platform.
Was the Audi 200 sold in the US before 1989?
Not under that name. The same car was sold in the US as the Audi 5000 from 1978 through 1988, including sportier 5000S and 5000CS Turbo Quattro variants that were the functional equivalent of the European 200. Audi renamed the US lineup to “100” and “200” for the 1989 model year to match the rest of the world and to distance the car from the 5000’s unintended-acceleration controversy.
What made the Audi 200 Turbo Quattro 20V significant?
Sold in the US for 1989 through 1991, it combined a 2.2-liter turbocharged, intercooled five-cylinder with a 20-valve head (220 PS/217 hp), quattro permanent all-wheel drive, and a luxury sedan body years before most competitors offered all-wheel drive on anything but a niche performance model. It is widely regarded as one of the earliest true quattro-equipped luxury sedans sold in North America.
Where is the VIN on an Audi 200?
The lower-left corner of the windshield, readable from outside the car, and the driver-side door jamb sticker. Both are required by federal labeling regulation for 1981-model-year-and-later cars. The engine bay firewall carries a physical stamp that should match both.
Is the Audi 200 VIN decoder really free?
Yes, with no sign-up, covering everything the factory stamped into the VIN. A full vehicle history report, covering accidents, odometer readings, and prior ownership, is an optional paid upgrade, and it matters more on a 30-plus-year-old car where title-washing and odometer fraud are harder to catch by eye. See our guide on VIN decoder versus vehicle history report for what each one actually covers.
Can an Audi 200 VIN be faked?
The 17 characters can be retyped on a counterfeit plate, but the check digit at position 9 catches most single-character changes through math, and the firewall stamp is physically tied to the original car. On a collector car this old, mismatched engine and plant details relative to the decoded VIN are a bigger red flag than most buyers realize. Our guide on how to check if a car is stolen by VIN walks through the verification steps.
