Every one of these came back from NHTSA with “VIN decoded clean, check digit (9th position) is correct.” That is worth flagging: unlike several other 1980s Alfa Romeo models we have researched for this site, whose European-market VINs don’t reliably follow ISO 3779 check-digit math, the US-market Milano does. That makes sense once you consider why. Selling a car in the United States meant complying with US VIN regulation (49 CFR Part 565) regardless of what Alfa did for its home market, so the Milano got a standard, checksum-valid 17-character VIN while the European 75 did not have to.

How to read a VIN: position by position
This breakdown applies to the standard 17-character VIN used on the US-market Milano. European-market 75 chassis numbers, being shorter and non-standard, don’t map onto it cleanly; where that matters, we say so.
Positions 1-3: WMI. ZAR on every genuine Alfa Romeo built for export. If a car sold as a Milano carries anything else in these three slots, treat the listing as suspect and re-check the physical VIN plate.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS). On the Milano VINs we examined, position 4 was consistently D, which appears to identify the 75/Milano sedan body and series. Positions 5 through 8 vary between samples (A114, B140, A124) and are where Alfa encoded engine and trim detail, but Alfa Romeo and FCA never published a public decode table for this era, and our samples don’t resolve cleanly into a single-character engine code; one VIN that NHTSA’s own database lists as 2.5-liter is independently identified elsewhere as a 3.0-liter Verde, a known data-quality gap in NHTSA’s older manufacturer-submitted records.
