About the Ram 1500
The “Ram” name has been on Dodge’s half-ton pickup since 1981, but the 1500 nameplate as most buyers recognize it starts with the 1994 redesign. Before that, the truck used older D-series/W-series naming. Ram became its own standalone brand in 2010, spun off from Dodge, taking the 1500/2500/3500 lineup with it starting with the 2011 model year. How to decode a Ram 1500 VIN, position by position
Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the table above. The badge on the truck (Dodge vs. Ram) tracks the WMI: 1B7 and 1D7 VINs decode as Dodge even though the truck is unmistakably a Ram 1500; 1C6 VINs decode as Ram outright.
Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section
This block carries cab style (Regular, Quad/Club, Crew, Mega), drivetrain (4×2 or 4×4), and restraint system, with position 8 pointing to the engine. Because the 1500’s engine lineup changed completely across four generations, position 8 means something different depending on the era. Two things worth knowing: the 1500 has never carried the Cummins inline-six diesel; that engine has always been reserved for the 2500/3500 Heavy Duty. And the EcoDiesel, introduced for 2014, was the first light-duty diesel in the half-ton segment, ending production in January 2023.
Position 9: Check digit
Calculated from the other 16 characters using modulo-11 math. A single mistyped character anywhere in a Ram 1500 VIN breaks this check, and any compliant decoder or DMV system will reject it.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character cycles through the ISO 30-year sequence. Verified against real Ram 1500 VINs spanning 1996 to 2026:

The cycle repeats from 9 (2009) through A (2010): B 2011, C 2012, D 2013, E 2014, F 2015, G 2016, H 2017, J 2018, K 2019, L 2020, M 2021, N 2022, P 2023, R 2024, S 2025, T 2026. I, O, and Q are always skipped. Since a Ram 1500 didn’t exist in 1980, every letter or digit on this table for a genuine 1500 points to its second pass through the cycle (2010 onward), except the 2nd- and 3rd-gen codes R through 8, which land on their first pass (1994-2008).

Sterling Heights is the sole current 1500 plant; Warren built the outgoing DS-generation Classic alongside it until that model retired in 2024.
Positions 12 to 17: Serial number

Where to find the VIN on a Ram 1500
- Lower-left corner of the windshield, visible from outside the truck
- Driver’s side door jamb sticker (VIN, GVWR, tire, and paint codes)
- Stamped on the frame rail near the front suspension, visible from underneath
- Vehicle title, registration, and the Mopar owner portal
The windshield and door jamb are the fastest to check on a used-truck lot. The frame stamp is worth checking if you suspect a mismatched or swapped VIN plate, since it’s physically welded to the chassis.
Ram 1500 recalls and safety
The 1500 has been the subject of several notable NHTSA campaigns:
- 22V-904 (2023): roughly 1.2 million 2019-2022 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks recalled for a misaligned tailgate striker that could let the tailgate open while driving.
- 2019-2020 airbag software recall: about 296,000 model-year 2019-2020 Ram 1500 trucks, where a restraint-control-module software error could disable airbags and seat-belt pretensioners after the engine shut off.
- 13V-528 (2013): hundreds of thousands of 2003-2008 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks recalled after a left tie-rod ball stud could fracture and cause a loss of steering.
