The generation code doesn’t sit inside the VIN as a literal substring the way it does on some competitors. FCA consolidated its Jeep WMI assignments from the older 1J4/1J8 codes onto 1C4 partway through the MK generation’s run, the same pattern seen across other Jeep models of that era.
