About Ram
Ram Trucks is the youngest of Stellantis’ North American brands, but its trucks are not new. Chrysler Group spun the pickup and commercial-vehicle lineup out of Dodge in 2010, creating a standalone brand built entirely around the Ram 1500, 2500/3500 Heavy Duty, and the commercial Chassis Cab and ProMaster van lines. The 2011 model year was the first to carry the Ram name alone, with no Dodge badge anywhere on the truck. Every Ram pickup before that split, going back to the original 1981 Dodge Ram, was sold and titled as a Dodge, and those earlier trucks still turn up on the road and on VinDecoderPlus’s Dodge decoder today.
Since the 2010 split, Ram has become one of the top-selling truck brands in the United States, trading places with Chevrolet Silverado for the number-two pickup spot behind the Ford F-150. The Ram 1500 is built in Michigan for the US and Canadian market, while the heavier-duty 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 Chassis Cabs, along with the ProMaster full-size van, come out of a dedicated truck plant in Saltillo, Mexico. Ram is now part of Stellantis, formed in 2021 when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles merged with Groupe PSA.
Ram WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO. Here are the WMIs you’ll encounter on Ram vehicles, verified against the NHTSA vPIC database:

If your Ram VIN begins with any of the codes above, it’s a genuine post-2010 Ram-branded truck. Older pickups from the same lineage, built before the 2010 brand split, carry Dodge WMIs such as 1D7 (USA) or 3D7 (Mexico) and decode as “Dodge” with model “Ram.” A VIN starting with an unlisted code may indicate a rebadge, a commercial conversion, or a counterfeit. How to read a Ram VIN: position by position
Every Ram VIN uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a Ram:
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. The country code at position 1 tells you where the vehicle was assembled, not where Ram or Stellantis is headquartered. A Ram Heavy Duty or ProMaster assembled in Mexico carries a “3” prefix even though the brand is marketed as an American truck line.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This block carries the model line (1500, 2500, 3500, 4500/5500 Chassis Cab, or ProMaster), cab configuration (Regular, Quad, Crew), drivetrain (2WD or 4WD), and restraint system. Position 8 typically points to the engine: Ram trucks are sold with the Pentastar V6, HEMI V8 (5.7L and the high-output 6.4L), the eTorque mild-hybrid system, the EcoDiesel V6, and the Cummins inline-six turbodiesel on Heavy Duty models.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Ram VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle. Skim the chart below to translate yours:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Ram, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0. Since Ram only became its own brand in 2010, VINs coded “A” for that year and later are true Ram trucks; anything earlier in this same body style decodes under Dodge.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. Confirmed Ram plant codes: N (Sterling Heights Assembly, Michigan, current Ram 1500), S (Warren Truck, Michigan, built earlier-generation Ram 1500 and Ram 1500 Classic through 2024), and G (Saltillo Truck Assembly, Mexico, Ram 2500, 3500, Chassis Cab, and ProMaster).
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific Ram as it rolled off the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Ram VIN globally unique.
Where to find the VIN on a Ram
You can find your Ram VIN in several places. The lower-left windshield and the door jamb are the easiest to read; the others are useful when one of those labels has been damaged or replaced.

Because Ram only became its own brand in 2010, any earlier Dodge Ram, including the first-generation trucks that predate the modern 17-character standard, is covered separately.
