About the Ram ProMaster

The ProMaster is a rebadged Fiat Ducato, the full-size European cargo van Fiat and Chrysler began sharing after their 2009 merger. Ram launched it for the 2014 model year to replace the Ram/Dodge Sprinter, itself a rebadged Mercedes-Benz van sold under the Dodge and Freightliner names. Unlike the Sprinter, the ProMaster isn’t a joint venture with an outside automaker; it’s built and badged in-house by what is now Stellantis.

The ProMaster has had one U.S. generation so far, riding on the Ducato’s third-generation platform. Fiat calls this platform “250” through 2014 and “X290” from the mid-cycle facelift onward, and the ProMaster has used X290 since day one:

Both eras are the same generation mechanically; Ram has never badged a “second generation” ProMaster the way it has for the 1500 pickup. So this page goes deeper on WMI, plant, engine, and configuration detail rather than tracking multiple platform changes.

One disambiguation up front: the ProMaster City is a different, smaller van built on the Fiat Doblo platform in Bursa, Turkey, sold in the US from 2015 to 2022. It shares a name and dashboard family resemblance with the full-size ProMaster and nothing else: different WMI (ZFB instead of 3C6), different factory, different chassis. Ram ProMaster WMI codes (positions 1-3)

Every full-size ProMaster is built at Chrysler de Mexico’s Saltillo, Coahuila plant. Its WMI depends on whether the unit left the factory as a complete vehicle or an incomplete chassis for an upfitter:

Both were verified against NHTSA’s vPIC database: a 2018 ProMaster 2500 High Roof Cargo Van (3C6TRVDGXJE140189) returns cleanly under 3C6, while a 2014 ProMaster 3500 Cutaway (3C7WRVLG1EE114290) returns under 3C7 with a “Body Class: Incomplete” flag, matching how Ram’s pickup Chassis Cabs use the same 3C7 prefix. No ProMaster has ever carried a 1C6 code; that prefix belongs to US-built Ram 1500 pickups.

How to decode a Ram ProMaster VIN, position by position

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the table above. Both ProMaster WMIs point to the same Saltillo plant; the difference is complete vs. incomplete vehicle, not location.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This block encodes model line (1500, 2500, 3500), wheelbase, roof height, and body style. Position 8 specifically carries the engine code, and it is where the ProMaster’s diesel history shows up directly in the VIN:

Both codes were confirmed against real VINs. 3C6TRVDGXJE140189 and several other Saltillo-built VINs decode to a 3.6L V6 with G at position 8. A constructed but checksum-valid VIN sharing the same 2016 model-year and plant characters, 3C6TRVDD8GE100000, decodes cleanly to a 3.0L diesel, and a real 2014 diesel ProMaster 3500 (3C6URVJD5EE130691) confirms the same D code in the wild. Ram dropped the diesel after the 2017 model year, part of the industry-wide diesel emissions fallout that also hit FCA’s pickup EcoDiesel; every ProMaster sold from 2018 on is gasoline-only.

Position 9: Check digit

Calculated from the other 16 characters using SAE’s modulo-11 weighting formula. A single mistyped character anywhere in the VIN breaks the check digit math, which is how NHTSA’s decoder and every state DMV catch transcription errors.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character follows the industry-standard 30-year cycle used across every US-market vehicle. Since the ProMaster launched in 2014, its VINs so far use these characters:

Positions 12-17: Serial number

• Model lines: 1500 (lightest duty), 2500 (the volume seller for cargo and camper conversions), 3500 (highest GVWR, extended wheelbase available)
• Body styles: Cargo Van, Window Van, and Cutaway/Chassis Cab (cab and frame only, for upfitters building box trucks, ambulances, and refrigerated bodies)
• Roof heights: Low Roof, High Roof, and (added later) Super High Roof
• Wheelbase: 118-inch, 136-inch, and 159-inch, with an Extended 159-inch option on the 3500
• ProMaster EV: added for 2024, Ram’s first factory electric van, sold as a Cargo Van and Step Van on the same X290 body

Ram ProMaster recalls and safety

The ProMaster has been the subject of several notable NHTSA safety campaigns:

• 2018-2026 cooling fan fire risk (roughly 291,700 vans): Stellantis confirmed in October 2025 that the cooling fan module can suffer premature bearing wear; combined with inadequate fuse protection on the 400-watt fan circuit, this can draw excess current and overheat. A remedy was still in development as of the recall notice.
• 2014-2017 airbag label mismatch: Sun visor labels, dash labels, and owner’s manuals on affected vans incorrectly stated the vehicles had frontal advanced airbags for driver and passenger when they did not, a labeling defect rather than hardware.
