About the BMW X1
The X1 is BMW’s smallest SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), launched for the 2010 model year in Europe as an answer to the growing compact-luxury-crossover segment that the Audi Q3, Range Rover Evoque, and Mercedes GLA would later join. It didn’t reach the US until model year 2013, badged only as sDrive28i and xDrive28i.

The chassis code itself never appears literally inside the VIN. It’s enthusiast shorthand, reconstructed from the WMI and VDS block together with the model year character, which is exactly what the decoder above does automatically.

Confirmed by decoding real, checksum-valid X1 VINs through NHTSA’s vPIC database across all three generations:

BMW switched the X1’s NHTSA vehicle-type classification from Passenger Car to Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV) exactly at the generation change from E84 to F48, and the WMI changed with it, from WBA to WBX. That’s a clean, reliable way to separate an E84 VIN from an F48 or U11 VIN before you even look at the model year character. If your X1 VIN starts with anything other than WBA or WBX, treat it as suspect and confirm with the decoder above.
How to decode a BMW X1 VIN, position by position
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. Position 1 identifies the assembly country registered for that WMI, not necessarily BMW’s headquarters, though in the X1’s case every US-market VIN we decoded genuinely traces back to a German-registered WMI.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
As with the X5 and 3 Series, BMW doesn’t dedicate a single fixed VIN character to “engine code” on the X1. Instead the VDS block changes by trim and generation:
- On the E84,
WBAVM1was the block we found on both 2013 and 2014 sDrive28i cars, whileWBAVL1covered xDrive28i cars across the same years. The engine and drivetrain live in that four-to-six-character block together, not in one isolated digit. - On the F48,
WBXHU7covered US sDrive28i cars from 2017-2019, and a relatedWBXHT3block covered xDrive28i. Starting with the 2020 model year, the xDrive28i block shifted toWBXJG9even though the trim, engine, and drivetrain stayed the same. The VDS block moved; the car underneath it didn’t. - On the U11, every US xDrive28i VIN we decoded shares the block
WBX73EF0.
The takeaway matches what we found on other BMW nameplates: don’t try to hand-read the exact engine off one VIN character. The engine families that came with each X1 generation, confirmed against BMW technical data and the VINs above, are:

Position 9: Check digit
Calculated from the other 16 characters using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math. A single mistyped character anywhere in the string breaks this math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it. Every VIN used to verify the facts on this page passed NHTSA’s check-digit validation cleanly.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on the industry-standard 30-year ISO 3779 cycle. The letters I, O, and Q are never used because they’re too easily confused with 1 and 0.

We directly confirmed D through R on real X1 VINs: D (2013) and E and F on the E84, G through N on the F48 (2016-2022), and P and R on the U11 (2023-2024). A, B, and C cover 2010-2012, the global-market E84 years before the X1 reached the US, and S onward covers current and future model years; we present those following the same fixed cycle rather than from a US-decoded VIN, since a US-market car from those years either predates the US launch or doesn’t exist yet.
Position 11: Assembly plant
A single character narrows the VIN to a specific factory. Across the VINs we decoded:

Worth flagging honestly: two F48-era VINs we decoded (2016 and 2017 model year, sharing the same WBXHT3Z3 block) returned a NHTSA plant-of-manufacture of Manaus, Brazil, with plant character 4. That’s unexpected: BMW’s Brazilian passenger-car plant is at Araquari, Santa Catarina, not Manaus, where BMW instead builds motorcycles. We can’t confirm whether that reflects a genuine data-submission quirk in NHTSA’s records or something else, so treat that specific plant character with more caution than the Leipzig and Regensburg entries above, which were consistent across every VIN we checked.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence for that specific car. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every X1 VIN globally unique, even two identical xDrive28i models built the same week at the same plant.
X1 trim levels by generation
A VIN doesn’t spell out the trim name directly; it’s reconstructed from the VDS block plus BMW’s build sheet. US-market X1 trims by generation:
- E84 (2013-2015): sDrive28i, xDrive28i
- F48 (2016-2022): sDrive28i, xDrive28i
- U11 (2023-present): xDrive28i, M35i (added for MY2024)
Global markets add trims never sold new in the US, including four-cylinder diesel variants (sDrive18d, xDrive20d, xDrive25d) across all three generations and the F48-only xDrive25e plug-in hybrid. BMW’s fully electric iX1 has been sold in Europe and China since 2022 but, as of this writing, has not launched in the US; reporting points to a next-generation “Neue Klasse” iX1 arriving stateside no earlier than 2027 or 2028.

BMW X1 recalls and safety
Real NHTSA campaigns confirmed against the recalls database for specific X1 model years:
- Roof and B-pillar trim (campaign 19V349000, MY2016-2019 F48): BMW recalled certain sDrive28i and xDrive28i models because the B-pillar’s interior trim may not absorb enough impact energy in a crash where an occupant’s head strikes it, a violation of FMVSS 201. Dealers replace the vertical trim pieces free of charge.
- Steering tie rod (campaign 19V601000, MY2018-2019 F48): an incorrectly assembled steering gear tie rod could wear excessively and eventually break, risking loss of vehicle control. BMW inspects and replaces the tie rods and ball joints as needed.
- Airbag control module (campaign 20V283000, MY2020 F48): a faulty rollover sensor in the airbag control unit could keep the head airbags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying in a rollover crash. BMW replaces the control unit.
- Front driver’s airbag (campaign 23V079000, MY2022-2023 X1 xDrive28i): the driver’s frontal airbag may have been manufactured incorrectly and might not deploy as intended in a crash.
- Auxiliary water pump (campaign 24V608000, covering MY2012-2015 X1 sDrive28i/xDrive28i among many other BMW models): an improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump could be exposed to moisture and short circuit, raising fire risk.
