About the BMW X3
The X3 launched for model year 2004 as BMW’s second SUV and its first compact one, arriving a few years after the X5 to compete with the then-new Land Rover Freelander and Acura RDX. Unlike the X5, which has been built almost entirely in Spartanburg, South Carolina since day one, the X3’s production has moved around more than any other BMW SUV: from contract manufacturing in Austria, to BMW’s own US plant, to a dedicated new plant in South Africa.

The E83 was never built in the US. BMW contracted Magna Steyr’s Graz, Austria plant to build the entire first generation, the same arrangement Magna Steyr had with other automakers at the time. Production shifted to BMW’s own Spartanburg plant when the F25 replaced it in September 2010, and that plant has anchored X3 production ever since. The G01 added a second dedicated line at BMW’s Rosslyn, South Africa plant starting in 2018, after a major upgrade to the facility specifically for X3 production; Rosslyn built its last G01 in September 2024 as the plant transitioned to the new G45. The chassis code itself is enthusiast shorthand and does not appear literally inside the VIN; the WMI and VDS block together with the model year character are what the decoder above cross-references to identify it.

Confirmed against NHTSA’s vPIC decoder using real, checksum-valid X3 VINs spanning all four generations:

That last row deserves the same caveat we found on the X5 page: a WBX VIN does not tell you the car was built in Germany. We decoded a 2004 E83 3.0i and a 2008 E83 3.0si that both carry WBX and both resolve to Graz, Austria in NHTSA’s plant field, and we also decoded 2023 and 2024 G01 xDrive30i VINs starting WBX that resolve to Rosslyn, South Africa. BMW assigns WBX to X3s built outside North America for global/export markets, not to a specific country. If your X3 VIN starts with anything other than 5UX, 5YM, or WBX, treat it as suspect and confirm with the decoder above.
How to decode a BMW X3 VIN, position by position
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. Position 1 identifies the assembly and registration country BMW chose for that build run, not necessarily BMW’s headquarters or the physical factory.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
As with the X5, BMW spreads model, body, and engine information across this five-character block rather than dedicating one fixed position to “engine code.” What we found by decoding real production VINs:
- On the E83, positions 4-5 carry the pattern:
PAfor the 3.0i (M54B30 six-cylinder),PCfor the 3.0si (N52B30 six-cylinder), both confirmed on real 2004 and 2008 VINs with position 8 unchanged at4on both. - On the F25, the block shifted with trim and engine over the generation’s run:
WX7C5decoded to a 2014 xDrive35i (turbo six),WX9C5decoded to a 2015 xDrive28i (by then a turbo four), and an earlierWX5C5decoded to a 2012 xDrive28i that was still the naturally aspirated six BMW used before the mid-cycle engine swap. The M40i, added partway through F25 production, used its own block (TS3C5on a 2019 car,TY9C0on a 2020 car). - On the G01,
53DP0decoded to xDrive30i on both a 2022 and a 2023 VIN, while83DP0decoded to M40i on 2023 and 2024 VINs. The Rosslyn-built export version of the same xDrive30i carries a different block,57DP0. - On the new G45, the base four-cylinder car uses
53GP0, one character removed from the outgoing G01’s53DP0block.
The practical takeaway is the same one we reached on the X5 page: there is no single VIN character you can read by eye to get the exact engine across 20-plus years of X3 production. Decode the full VIN with the tool above rather than guessing from one digit.

The M54, N52, N55, B58, and S58 codes above are documented in BMW’s own service literature; NHTSA’s decoder confirms the cylinder count and displacement for each (for example, both the 2019 and 2020 M40i VINs we decoded return 6 cylinders at 3.0L, consistent with B58, and the 2020 X3 M VIN returns 6 cylinders at 3.0L, consistent with S58).
Position 9: Check digit
Calculated from the other 16 characters using modulo-11 math. Every VIN used to research this page passed NHTSA’s check-digit validation; a single mistyped character anywhere in the string breaks that math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character cycles through the full 30-year ISO 3779 / SAE J853 pattern. Because the X3 has only existed since model year 2004, here is every character relevant to its production run so far:

I, O, and Q are never used, since they can be confused with 1 and 0. Note that 4 covers both 2004 and 2034, thirty years apart; that’s not a problem in practice today, since the WMI and VDS block at positions 1-8 (E83’s WBXPA9... or WBXPC9... block versus anything from the current G45 lineup) make the two eras impossible to confuse. We confirmed this cycle directly: position 10 4 decoded to model year 2004 on a real E83 VIN, 8 decoded to 2008 on another E83, and E, F, N, P, R, and S all decoded correctly on F25, G01, and G45-era VINs from 2014 through 2025.
Position 11: Assembly plant
A single character narrows the VIN to a specific line, though BMW has not held one character fixed to one plant across the X3’s history. Decoding real VINs from Spartanburg, we found the plant character rotate between 0, 9, and L depending on the model year, all resolving to Greer, South Carolina in NHTSA’s plant field regardless of which character appears. Graz-built E83 VINs consistently used W. Rosslyn-built G01 VINs consistently used N. If you need to confirm the physical factory rather than guess from this one character, decode the full VIN with the tool above; it reads NHTSA’s plant-of-manufacture field directly.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence for that specific X3. Combined with everything before it, this makes every X3 VIN globally unique, even two identical G01 xDrive30i models built the same week at the same plant.
X3 trim levels by generation
A VIN does not spell out the trim name directly; it is reconstructed from the VDS block plus the equipment group on BMW’s build sheet. US-market X3 trims by generation:
- E83 (2004-2010): 2.5i, 3.0i, 3.0si (2007-2010, replacing 2.5i/3.0i after the LCI facelift)
- F25 (2011-2017): xDrive28i, xDrive35i, M40i (added for 2016)
- G01 (2018-2024): sDrive30i (early US base, later dropped), xDrive30i, xDrive30e (plug-in hybrid), M40i, X3 M, X3 M Competition
- G45 (2024-present): 30 xDrive, M50 xDrive, with 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid and diesel variants sold in Europe and other markets outside North America

BMW X3 recalls and safety
Three campaigns illustrate the range of issues the X3 has been recalled for, drawn from NHTSA’s recall database:
- Rearview camera image loss (campaign 19V684000, 2018-2020 model years): BMW recalled a large group of 2018-2020 vehicles, including X3 sDrive, xDrive, M40i, and X3 M, because the back-up camera’s display settings could be adjusted so the rearview image no longer appeared, and the setting persisted the next time the car was put in reverse. That put the affected cars out of compliance with FMVSS 111. BMW’s fix was a free dealer software update.
- Front passenger airbag deactivation (campaign 21V521000, 2018-2019 X3 sDrive30i, xDrive30i, and M40i): the front passenger seat’s occupant classification system could be assembled incorrectly, misreading an occupied seat as empty and disabling the front airbag. BMW replaced the seat foam and classification sensor free of charge; owner letters went out in September 2021.
- Rear cargo rail attachment (campaigns 24V534000 and 24V764000, 2018-2023 X3 sDrive30i, xDrive30i, M40i, and X3 M): the mounting for the interior rear cargo rail could be damaged in a rear-end crash and detach, raising injury risk. BMW’s first fix (24V-534) proved insufficient, and BMW issued a second campaign (24V-764) later the same year to replace the same bolts with an updated part; owners who already had the first repair still need the second one.
