About the BMW 3 Series
The 3 Series launched in 1975 as the E21 and has been BMW’s best-selling and most influential nameplate ever since, the car most people mean when they say “the ultimate driving machine.” Unlike most manufacturers, BMW enthusiasts and BMW itself refer to each generation by an internal chassis code rather than a model year range, and those codes appear inside the VIN.

A genuinely important distinction: starting with the F30 generation, BMW spun the coupe and convertible off into a separate 4 Series nameplate. The F32 coupe, F33 convertible, and F36 Gran Coupe launched for model year 2014 and share the F30’s platform and much of its VIN structure, but they are marketed, badged, and decoded as 4 Series, not 3 Series. The same split carries into the current G22/G23/G26 4 Series alongside the G20/G21 3 Series. If your VIN decodes to a two-door coupe or a convertible from 2014 onward, it’s a 4 Series even though it descends directly from the 3 Series line.
BMW 3 Series WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. These are the WMIs confirmed on real 3 Series VINs decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC database:

A large share of US-market G20 330i and 320i sedans built from 2019 onward carry a 3MW WMI, not WBA, because BMW opened its San Luis Potosí plant specifically to supply the 3 Series (and later the 2 Series Coupe and M2) to North and South America. BMW also builds a China-only long-wheelbase 3 Series sedan at its Shenyang, China plant for the domestic Chinese market; that variant is not sold in North America, so it does not appear in NHTSA’s decoder and its WMI isn’t independently verifiable here.
How to decode a BMW 3 Series VIN, position by position
Every 3 Series built since 1981 uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard (the E21 and early E30 predate this and use a shorter chassis number; see our classic car VIN decoder guide for those).
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. Position 1 identifies the assembly country, not BMW’s headquarters. A 3 Series built in Mexico is still a genuine BMW; its VIN simply starts with 3 instead of W.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where BMW encodes series, body, and engine, but not the way Kia or Hyundai do it with one dedicated engine-code character. Across the generations we decoded, BMW spreads that information differently depending on the era: on the G20, position 8 cleanly separates a turbo four (5, B46 engine, 330i) from the turbo inline-six (0, B58 engine, M340i). On the F30, the same distinction instead lives in positions 4-5 (3A for four-cylinder 328i/330i cars, 8B for six-cylinder 340i cars), with position 8 unchanged between them. On the E90, we found the identical VDS block on a 2009 335i with the N54 engine and a 2011 335i with the N55 that replaced it, meaning the position-8 character didn’t change across that engine swap at all.
The takeaway: there is no single fixed VIN position that reliably spells out “engine code” across 50 years of 3 Series production the way there is on many other brands. What you can rely on is the engine family that came with each generation:

Position 9: Check digit
Calculated from the other 16 characters using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math. A single mistyped character anywhere in the VIN breaks this math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it. Two of the “real” VINs we sourced from online listings for this page failed the check digit entirely, almost certainly typos introduced when the listing was transcribed, a good reminder to always verify a VIN against the plate or door jamb before relying on a decode.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character cycles through a 30-year pattern shared across the industry. Because the 3 Series has been in continuous production since before the cycle repeated, the same letter can mean two different years, 30 years apart:

I, O, and Q are never used, since they’re too easily confused with 1 and 0. Use the WMI and the chassis-code characters at positions 4-6 to tell the two cycles apart: no F30 or G20 existed in 1990, so an L on one of those cars can only mean 2020.
Position 11: Assembly plant
A single character narrows the VIN to a specific factory, though on BMW the exact letter used has shifted across generations and production runs rather than staying fixed to one plant for 50 years. These are the plants we confirmed by decoding real 3 Series VINs:

Munich is the historic home of the 3 Series and still builds the sedan, but it hasn’t been the only plant for decades. Regensburg has built 3 Series cars, including M3 variants, since the 1980s. Rosslyn (South Africa) has assembled RHD-market 3 Series units, and San Luis Potosí now supplies most of the North American G20 lineup.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six digits are the production sequence for that specific car. Combined with everything before it, this makes every 3 Series VIN globally unique, even two identical M340i xDrive sedans built the same week at the same plant.
3 Series trim levels by generation
A VIN doesn’t spell out the trim name directly; it’s reconstructed from the VDS plus the factory build sheet. Broadly, US-market 3 Series trims by generation:
- E30 (1984-1991): 318i, 325e, 325i, 325is, 325iX, M3
- E36 (1992-1999): 318i, 318is, 318ti, 325i, 328i, M3
- E46 (1999-2006): 318i/Ci, 323i, 325i/Ci/xi, 328i, 330i/Ci/xi, M3
- E90/91/92/93 (2006-2013): 325i, 328i, 330i, 335i/xi/is, M3
- F30/31/34 (2012-2019): 320i, 328i/d, 330i/e (plug-in hybrid), 335i, 340i, Gran Turismo variants
- G20/21 (2019-present): 320i, 330i/e (plug-in hybrid), M340i; the M3 moved to its own G80 chassis code but is still marketed under the 3 Series name
Where to find the VIN on a BMW 3 Series

On pre-1981 E21 and early E30 models, the chassis number is shorter than 17 characters and follows an older BMW-specific format; check the door jamb and the strut tower stamp rather than relying on a modern VIN decoder.
BMW 3 Series recalls and safety
Two recalls stand out for the volume of 3 Series cars they touched:
- Takata airbag inflators (2006-2012 E90/E91/E92/E93): BMW recalled roughly 394,000 3 Series cars from this generation for defective Takata airbag inflators that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin. Some cases involved owners installing salvaged, unrepaired Takata airbags during aftermarket steering-wheel swaps.
- Fuel pump failure (campaign 15V-189, MY2014 3 Series): BMW recalled roughly 11,000 model-year-2014 3 Series cars (320i, 328i, 335i and their xDrive/hybrid variants) built between September 2013 and April 2014 for fuel pumps that can fail and stall the engine.

What’s the difference between a 3 Series VIN and a 4 Series VIN?
Starting with model year 2014, BMW split the 3 Series coupe and convertible into a separate 4 Series nameplate (F32 coupe, F33 convertible, F36 Gran Coupe, built on the same F30 platform). A pre-2014 3 Series coupe or convertible (E36, E46, E92, E93) decodes as a 3 Series. A 2014-or-newer two-door or convertible from the same platform family decodes as a 4 Series, even though the underlying engineering is shared.
Where is the VIN on a BMW 3 Series?

What does a 3 Series VIN starting with 3MW mean?
3MW is the WMI for BMW’s San Luis Potosí, Mexico plant, which has built the G20-generation 3 Series for North and South America since 2019. It doesn’t mean the car is a different or lesser 3 Series; it’s the same G20 built at a newer plant alongside Munich production.
Can a BMW 3 Series VIN be faked?
The 17 characters can be retyped on a counterfeit plate, but the check digit at position 9 catches nearly all single-character tampering through math, and the strut-tower stamp is physically tied to the original car.
