About the BMW X5

The X5 launched for model year 2000 as BMW’s first-ever SUV, badged a “Sports Activity Vehicle” to distance it from truck-based competitors. The chassis code itself does not appear literally inside the VIN; it is enthusiast shorthand. The VIN encodes generation through the WMI and VDS block together with the model year character, which is what the decoder above cross-references.

Confirmed against NHTSA’s vPIC decoder using real X5 VINs spanning all four generations:

That last row is not a typo. We decoded VINs for European-market F15 diesel variants (25d, 30dX, M50dX) that begin with WBA, and NHTSA’s own plant-of-manufacture field returns Greer, South Carolina for all of them, same as a 5UX VIN. BMW registers the same Spartanburg-built car under a German WMI when it’s destined for export markets outside North America. A WBA-prefix X5 VIN doesn’t necessarily mean the car came from Germany; cross-reference with the decoder above to confirm the actual plant.

How to decode a BMW X5 VIN, position by position

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. If your X5 VIN starts with anything other than 5UX, 4US, or WBA, treat it as suspect and confirm with the decoder above.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

Here the honest answer matters more than a tidy table: BMW spreads the X5’s model, body, and engine information across positions 4-8 as a block, and that block changes even within one generation:

  • On the E53, position 4 stays F throughout, but position 5 flips with engine: A for the 3.0i inline-six, B for the 4.4i V8. Confirmed VIN WBAFA53561LM82935 decodes as a 2001 3.0i; 5UXFB53504LV07105 decodes as a 2004 4.4i.
  • On the E70, the pre-facelift block 5UXFE (through 2010) was replaced by 5UXZV after the 2011 LCI refresh, for the same xDrive35i trim. The chassis code didn’t change; the VIN block did.
  • On the F15, 5UXKR is the block for the US-market xDrive50i, confirmed on VIN 5UXKR6C51E0C02900 (2014). Diesel variants sold outside North America use a different WMI entirely (WBA) rather than a different position-8 digit.

Don’t try to hand-decode the exact engine from one VIN character on an X5; the full positions 4-8 block, matched against BMW’s build data, is what pins down engine and trim.

Position 9: Check digit

Calculated from the other 16 characters using modulo-11 math. A single mistyped character breaks the math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it. Every VIN used to verify this page passed NHTSA’s check-digit validation.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on a 30-year cycle, same as every VIN built to the ISO 3779 standard:

For pre-2006 E53 X5s, the same cycle runs backward: Y = 2000, 1 = 2001, 2 = 2002, 3 = 2003, 4 = 2004, 5 = 2005. We confirmed several of these directly: position 10 1 decoded to model year 2001 on a real E53 VIN, and 4 decoded to 2004 on another.

Position 11: Assembly plant

A single character identifying the specific factory or line. Across the confirmed X5 VINs we decoded, L was the plant character most consistently tied to Spartanburg (Greer), South Carolina. Some newer G05 and WBA-prefix export-spec VINs use other characters, including digits, for the same physical plant; BMW appears to rotate the code as production volume exhausts one. NHTSA’s own plant-of-manufacture field confirms all of these resolve back to Greer, regardless of which single character appears.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The production sequence number for that specific X5. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every X5 VIN globally unique.
