About the BMW 7 Series
The 7 Series has been BMW’s flagship sedan since 1977, the car that introduces the technology (anti-lock brakes, a trip computer, a V12 engine, iDrive, night vision) that eventually filters down to the rest of the lineup. Unlike the 3 Series or X5, the 7 Series has never been built anywhere but Dingolfing, Germany; every generation, in every decoded VIN we checked for this page, resolves to that one plant.

As with the 3 Series and X5, the chassis code itself is enthusiast shorthand and doesn’t appear literally inside the VIN. It’s reconstructed from the WMI, the VDS block at positions 4-8, and the model year character together, which is exactly what the decoder above does automatically.

Every 7 Series VIN we decoded for this page, from a 1981 733i through a 2024 760i, carries the same World Manufacturer Identifier:

That consistency is itself worth noting. BMW builds the 3 Series in Mexico and the X5 exclusively in South Carolina, but it has never assembled a 7 Series outside Dingolfing, and it has never needed a second WMI to cover an alternate plant the way it does for those other nameplates. If a VIN claiming to be a 7 Series starts with anything other than WBA, treat it as suspect and confirm with the decoder above. We did not find a verifiable WBS (BMW M GmbH) 7 Series VIN; BMW has never sold a full “M7” the way it sells an M3 or M5, so the closest thing, the M760i, is an M Performance model that still carries a standard WBA code.
How to decode a BMW 7 Series VIN, position by position
Every 7 Series sold from the 1981 model year onward uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The first three years of E23 production, 1977 through 1980, predate that standard; see the note in the VIN location section below.
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. Position 1 identifies the assembly country, which for the 7 Series has always been Germany.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where BMW encodes body, restraint, and engine information, spread across five characters rather than one dedicated “engine code” digit. These are the VDS blocks we confirmed by decoding real, checksum-valid 7 Series VINs:

We could not independently verify a VDS block for a V8-engined F01/F02 750i from an online listing with a matching, checksum-valid VIN; if you’re trying to distinguish an F01-era 740i from a 750i, decode the full VIN with the tool above rather than reading position 8 alone, since BMW does not use one fixed character for engine family the way Kia or Hyundai do.
Position 9: Check digit
Calculated from the other 16 characters using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math. Every VIN used to verify this page passed NHTSA’s check-digit validation; a single mistyped character anywhere in the string breaks that math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it. Position 10: Model year
The 10th character cycles through a 30-year pattern shared across the entire industry. Because the 7 Series has used a 17-character VIN continuously since the 1981 model year, it has already run through one full cycle. For a 1981-2009 7 Series:

For a 2010-present 7 Series, the cycle repeats with the same letters and digits meaning a different, later year:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used, since they’re too easily confused with 1 and 0. We confirmed both ends of this cycle directly: B decoded to 1981 on a real E23 VIN and to 2011 on a real F01 VIN, thirty years apart on the same letter. Use the WMI and the VDS block together to tell the two cycles apart; no G70 existed in 1993, so a P on one of those cars can only mean 2023.
Position 11: Assembly plant
A single character narrows the VIN to a specific line within Dingolfing, though BMW rotates which character it uses as production volume exhausts one code, rather than keeping a single letter tied to the plant for decades. Across the VINs we decoded for this page, position 11 appeared as D (E32, E38, E65/E66), C (F01/F02 and, again, G70), and G (later F01/F02 and G11/G12). NHTSA’s own plant-of-manufacture field returns Dingolfing, Germany for every one of them regardless of which single character appears, the same pattern our BMW X5 page found for Spartanburg.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence for that specific car. Combined with everything before it, this makes every 7 Series VIN globally unique, even two identical 2024 760i xDrive sedans built the same week.
7 Series trim levels by generation
A VIN doesn’t spell out the trim name directly; it’s reconstructed from the VDS block plus the factory build sheet. Broadly, US-market 7 Series trims by generation:

Where to find the VIN on a BMW 7 Series

On a 1977-1980 E23, built before ISO 3779 existed, the car does not carry a 17-character VIN at all. BMW 7 Series recalls and safety
Real NHTSA campaigns confirmed against the agency’s recalls database for specific 7 Series model years:
- Door latch inadvertent opening (campaigns 12V504000 and 17V328000, 2005-2008 745i/745Li/750i/750Li/760i/760Li and B7 Alpina): cars with both Comfort Access and Soft Close Automatic could appear latched but actually open unexpectedly; BMW issued a software fix in 2012 and a further door-latch-system update in 2018.
- Incorrect taillight assembly (campaign 17V379000, 2013-2015 740i/740Li/740Lxi/750i/750xi/750Li/750Lxi and 2014 ActiveHybrid 7): some cars received the wrong replacement left rear taillight, a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 non-compliance; dealers replaced the assembly free.

Was the BMW 7 Series ever built outside Germany?
Not based on any VIN we could verify. Every 7 Series generation we decoded, from a 1981 E23 733i to a 2024 G70 760i, resolves to Dingolfing, Germany in NHTSA’s plant-of-manufacture field. That’s different from the 3 Series, which BMW also builds in Mexico, and the X5, which is built entirely in South Carolina.
Does a pre-1981 BMW 7 Series have a VIN?
No, not a modern 17-character one. The E23, the first 7 Series, launched for the 1977 model year, four years before ISO 3779 standardized the 17-character VIN in 1981. Cars from the first few E23 model years carry BMW’s own shorter chassis number instead. From the 1981 model year forward, including the real 733i VINs verified for this page, the E23 carries a full, standard, checksum-valid VIN.
