Acura EL VIN Decoder

Decode any Acura EL VIN free in under three seconds. Type the 17-character vehicle identification number into the decoder above and pull the generation, model year, plant of origin, and any open Transport Canada or NHTSA recalls. No account, no credit card, no email gate.

One thing to know before you decode: the Acura EL was sold exclusively in Canada from 1997 to 2005. It never appeared on a US Acura lot, which means NHTSA’s vPIC database, the same government system every decoder including this one draws from, was built almost entirely from US-market submissions. For an EL, vPIC reliably confirms the make, model year, vehicle type, and assembly plant, but it does not carry a full trim or engine pattern the way it does for a US-market Acura like the MDX or TL. We’ll flag exactly where that gap shows up below rather than paper over it with a table we can’t back up.

About the Acura EL

The EL was Honda’s answer to a specific Canadian market gap: Acura needed an entry-level model to compete with Canadian-market entry-luxury Hondas, and Honda already had a Civic-based sedan platform (built for the Japanese-market Honda Domani) it could badge and equip as an Acura. The result, launched for 1997, became Acura’s top-selling Canadian model through 2003 and remained in production until the CSX replaced it for 2006.

Generation Years Based on Engine Trims
1st gen 1997-2000 6th-generation Honda Civic 1.6L D16Y8 SOHC VTEC I4, 127 hp Base, Sport, Premium
2nd gen 2001-2005 7th-generation Honda Civic 1.7L D17A2 SOHC I4, 127 hp Touring, Premium

Both generations were built at Honda’s Alliston, Ontario plant, the same facility that later built the first two generations of the Acura MDX. The EL was, in fact, the first Acura ever assembled in Canada. First-generation cars also had a second life abroad: Honda re-badged the same body as the second-generation Honda Domani for the Japanese market.

Acura EL WMI codes (positions 1 to 3)

The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO. We pulled real, checksum-valid Acura EL VINs from both generations, spanning 1997 through 2003, off salvage-auction listings and decoded each one against NHTSA’s vPIC API. Every single one starts with the same three characters:

WMI Country Manufacturer (per NHTSA) Generations built here
2HH Canada Honda of Canada Mfg., a division of Honda Canada Inc. 1st gen, 2nd gen

We did not find, and are not going to guess at, a second WMI for the EL. Some VIN-decoder sites and AI search summaries mention other Acura Canada-related prefixes in passing, but none of them turned up on an actual decoded EL VIN, so they’re not in this table. If your EL’s VIN starts with anything other than 2HH, treat it as suspect and decode the full string with the tool above to confirm.

How to read an Acura EL VIN, position by position

Every EL uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard adopted industry-wide in 1981. Here’s what each block means, verified against real decoded examples rather than assumed from a generic template.

Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

Covered above. Every genuine Acura EL VIN opens with 2HH, identifying a Canadian-built passenger car from Honda of Canada Mfg. The country code identifies the factory, not Acura’s Torrance, California headquarters.

Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This is where we have to be honest about the limits of what’s publicly verifiable. NHTSA’s vPIC does not carry a trim or engine pattern for the Acura EL (the “unused position” flag comes back for characters 4 through 8 on every EL VIN we tested), because the EL was never submitted into the US compliance system the VDS patterns are built from. What we can tell you comes from comparing real VINs directly:

Example VIN Model year VDS (positions 4-8)
2HHMB4667VH906029 1997 MB466
2HHMB4649XH903537 1999 MB464
2HHMB4662YH903396 2000 MB466
2HHES36862H008596 2002 ES368
2HHES36872H005657 2002 ES368
2HHES36613H002804 2003 ES366

A pattern is visible even without an official key: first-generation cars (1.6 EL) carry MB4 at positions 4 to 6, second-generation cars (1.7 EL) carry ES3 instead, so those three characters shift with the generation the same way a platform code would. Position 8 then varies within a generation (6 versus 4 on the 1st-gen cars, 8 versus 6 on the 2nd-gen cars), which is consistent with it encoding trim or an equipment variant, similar to how position 8 works on the related Acura MDX. We don’t have enough independently trim-labeled VINs to say definitively which digit means Base versus Sport versus Premium, and we’d rather tell you that than invent a mapping. The decoder above cross-references the full VDS string against Honda’s build data directly, which is the only reliable way to pin down the exact trim.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math defined in the same ISO 3779 standard used worldwide. Every VIN cited on this page passes that check: mistype a single character anywhere in an EL’s VIN and the math stops working, and any compliant decoder, provincial registry, or the Transport Canada recall database will reject the entry.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on the industry-wide 30-year cycle. For the EL’s 1997-2005 production run, here’s the complete table, with no years skipped:

Char Year
V 1997
W 1998
X 1999
Y 2000
1 2001
2 2002
3 2003
4 2004
5 2005

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in this position because they’re too easily mistaken for 1 and 0. We confirmed V, X, Y, 2, and 3 directly against real EL VINs decoded through NHTSA; W, 1, and 4 follow the same fixed, universal ISO sequence and aren’t specific to Acura, so there’s no ambiguity to resolve even without a decoded example sitting in front of us for 1998, 2001, and 2004.

Position 11: Assembly plant

A single character identifies the specific factory. Every EL VIN we decoded, across both generations, carried the same character here:

Char Plant
H Alliston, Ontario, Canada

That’s expected: the EL was built at one plant for its entire run. NHTSA’s vPIC independently confirmed “Alliston, Ontario, Canada” as the plant city, state, and country on every VIN we decoded, which is a stronger confirmation than the character alone.

Positions 12 to 17: Serial number

The final six characters are the sequential production number stamped on that specific car as it came off the line at Alliston. Combined with the first 11 characters, this makes every EL VIN globally unique, even between two cars built the same model year on the same day.

Where to find the VIN on an Acura EL

Three reliable spots, plus the paperwork:

  • Lower-left corner of the windshield, visible from outside the car
  • Driver’s side door jamb sticker (also lists tire pressure and GVWR)
  • Vehicle registration, insurance card, or ownership permit (Canadian provinces call this the vehicle permit rather than a title)

Because the EL predates most VIN-etching programs, don’t expect to find the number stamped into window glass the way you might on a newer car. The windshield and door jamb are your two fastest checks on a used-car lot, and they should match exactly, character for character.

Recalls and safety information

The most significant Acura EL recall is Transport Canada recall 2010042 (also filed as RA-71934), first published February 11, 2010. It covers the 2001-2003 model years of several Honda and Acura models built on shared platforms, including the Acura EL, for a driver’s airbag inflator that could build excessive internal pressure. If the airbag deploys, the inflator can rupture and send metal fragments through the cushion material, risking injury to the driver. The remedy is a dealer replacement of the airbag inflator at no cost. This recall predates and is separate from the later, much larger industry-wide Takata inflator campaign that affected many other Honda and Acura models into the 2010s; check your specific VIN rather than assuming which campaign applies.

To check your EL:

  1. Decode the VIN with the tool above to confirm the exact model year
  2. Cross-reference the 17-character VIN with Transport Canada’s recall database or Acura Canada’s recall checker
  3. Contact your nearest Acura or Honda dealer for any open campaign repair

Recall repairs are free regardless of the vehicle’s age, mileage, or ownership history, even on a car this old.

Frequently asked questions

Why was the Acura EL only sold in Canada?

Acura needed an entry-level model to compete in the Canadian market, where import-brand shoppers cross-shopped Acura against loaded Honda Civics and other small luxury-adjacent sedans. Rather than develop a unique model, Honda badged and equipped a Civic-based sedan (built for the Japanese-market Honda Domani) as an Acura and sold it only north of the border. The US Acura lineup went straight from the Integra to compact luxury without a Civic-based stand-in, since Acura USA had different competitive pressure and Honda didn’t see the same gap to fill there.

How do I decode an Acura EL VIN?

Type the 17-character VIN from the windshield, door jamb, or vehicle permit into the decoder at the top of this page. Results return in under three seconds and include model year, generation, assembly plant, and any open Transport Canada or NHTSA recalls. No sign-up.

Where is the VIN on an Acura EL?

The two easiest spots are the lower-left corner of the windshield, read from outside the car, and the driver-side door jamb sticker. Both are required labelling locations. Match them character for character; a mismatch is a red flag.

What does an Acura EL VIN starting with 2HH mean?

2HH is the WMI for Honda of Canada Mfg., the manufacturer code NHTSA has on file for Acura vehicles built at the Alliston, Ontario plant. Every genuine EL VIN we tested, across both generations, starts with 2HH. It’s the same country-and-manufacturer prefix used on other Alliston-built Acuras from the same era.

How do I tell the generation of my EL from the VIN?

Look at positions 4 to 6. MB4 indicates a first-generation car (1997-2000, 1.6L D16Y8 engine). ES3 indicates a second-generation car (2001-2005, 1.7L D17A2 engine). The 10th character then confirms the exact model year within that generation.

Is the Acura EL VIN decoder really free?

Yes. VinDecoderPlus decodes every Acura EL VIN free of charge with no sign-up. The basic decode covers everything publicly verifiable from the VIN structure. Because the EL is a Canada-only, 20-plus-year-old nameplate, some fields that a newer US-market VIN returns (like a factory trim string) aren’t available from any public source, and we say so rather than guess.

Can an Acura EL VIN be faked?

The 17 characters can be retyped on a counterfeit plate or forged permit, but the check digit at position 9 catches most single-character changes through math alone. On a car this old, cross-check the VIN against the door jamb sticker and the vehicle permit, and be extra cautious buying sight-unseen since the EL was never a high-volume nameplate to begin with. The guide on how to check if a car is stolen by VIN walks through the verification steps in more depth.
