That fourth-generation shift is the biggest change the nameplate has seen since launch: a longer wheelbase, a wider track, and a move toward a more rear-biased Super Handling All-Wheel Drive layout, a departure from the front-drive-based Odyssey underpinnings the first three generations shared. Type S, which arrived alongside the redesign, is the quickest and most powerful production Acura SUV built to date.

How to decode an Acura MDX VIN, position by position

Every MDX built since 2001 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. The string breaks into three blocks, and each character carries specific meaning.

Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the table above. The first character is the country of build, the second is the manufacturer, and the third encodes vehicle class. 2HN means a Canadian-built Acura; 5J8 and 5FR mean a US-built Acura SUV. The country code identifies the factory, not Acura’s headquarters in Torrance, California.

Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

Honesty matters more than a tidy table here. On many brands position 8 is a clean single-character engine code; on the MDX it isn’t. We tested dozens of checksum-valid, NHTSA-confirmed VINs across every generation, and the character that actually separates one drivetrain from another is position 6, the third character of the YD_ or YE_ string: YD1 and YD2 are whole generations by themselves, YD3 is 3rd-gen front-wheel drive, YD4 is 3rd-gen SH-AWD, YD7 is the 3rd-gen Sport Hybrid, YD8 is the 4th-gen Type S, and YE1 is the 4th-gen base SH-AWD.

Position 8, by contrast, tracks trim and equipment package. On real decoded YD3/YD4/YD7 VINs from the same 2018 model year, the identical J35Y5 engine came back under position-8 characters corresponding to Standard, Tech, Tech Entertainment, Advance Entertainment, Elite, and SH-AWD variants. Don’t try to reverse-engineer the engine from position 8 alone; the decoder above reads the full VDS pattern against Honda’s actual build tables, which is the only reliable way to get the real answer.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the one character in the VIN that catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. Mistype a single character anywhere in the VIN and the math no longer matches; any compliant decoder, every state DMV, and the NHTSA recall database will reject the entry. Every VIN cited on this page passes that check.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on a 30-year cycle, the same cycle used across the entire industry:

The letters I, O, and Q are skipped because they resemble 1 and 0. Because the MDX has run continuously since 2001, this single cycle covers every model year the nameplate has used; there’s no wraparound ambiguity to resolve the way there is on a nameplate that predates 1997.

Position 11: Assembly plant

A single character identifies the specific factory. We confirmed each of these against real, checksum-valid MDX VINs:

Where to find the VIN on an Acura MDX

Several locations on every MDX, plus the paperwork:
