About the Acura Integra
Honda launched the Integra in Japan in 1985 and brought it to the newly created Acura brand for the 1986 model year, making it one of two vehicles (alongside the Legend) that founded the entire Acura lineup. It ran three generations before Acura discontinued the nameplate after 2001 in favor of the RSX, a car that inherited the Integra’s mission (sporty Honda Civic-based coupe) without the name. The RSX itself was discontinued in 2006 with no direct successor for 16 years, until Acura brought the Integra name back for the 2023 model year as a Civic-based liftback sedan, again with an eventual high-performance Type S variant. The original Integra was never built in the United States at any point in its 1986-2001 run, contrary to what you might assume given how many other Honda and Acura models eventually moved to Ohio. How to read an Acura Integra VIN, position by position
Every Integra VIN, from the first 1986 cars through the current model, uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard: a World Manufacturer Identifier, a Vehicle Descriptor Section, a check digit, and a Vehicle Identifier Section.
Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. This single block is the fastest way to tell the two Integra eras apart before you even look at the model year character: JH4 is always a Japan-built classic Integra, 19U is always an Ohio-built revived Integra.
Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where the chassis code and engine live, and the pattern differs meaningfully between the two eras.
On the classic Integra, positions 4 to 6 spell out the actual chassis prefix Honda used internally. We confirmed DA1 (1986 LX hatchback), DA9 (1990 LS hatchback), DB7 (1994 LS sedan), and DC2 (1996 GS-R hatchback, and separately a 2001 Type R) against real, checksum-valid VINs. Broadly: DA codes cover the first two generations (1986-1993), DB codes cover third-generation sedans, and DC codes cover third-generation coupes and hatchbacks, including the GS-R and Type R (1994-2001). Position 8 on these older VINs frequently returns no published meaning in NHTSA’s database on its own; engine identity is more reliably read from the Engine Model field the decoder above returns (we confirmed D16A1 on a 1986 1.6L, B18A1 on a 1990 1.8L, and B18C5 on a 2001 Type R rated at 195 hp), not guessed from a single VDS character.
On the revived Integra, positions 4 to 6 read DE4 on every non-Type S VIN we decoded (Base, A-Spec, and A-Spec Tech trims, all sharing the 1.5L turbocharged L15CA engine at 200 hp) and DE5 on every 2024-2025 Type S VIN we decoded (2.0L turbocharged K20C8, 320 hp). Position 7 tracked transmission in the VINs we checked: G appeared on manual-transmission builds and H on CVT builds of the 1.5L car, while Type S, which is manual-only, carried G. Trim name itself (Base vs. A-Spec vs. A-Spec Tech) isn’t spelled out in a single character; it’s reconstructed from the full VDS plus the build data, which is exactly what the decoder above does.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. Every VIN used to build this page passed NHTSA’s check-digit validation; mistype one character anywhere in an Integra VIN and the math stops matching, which is why a compliant decoder, a state DMV, or the NHTSA recall lookup will reject it.
Position 10: Model year
This is the character that trips people up on the Integra specifically, because both eras sit inside the same repeating 30-year cycle, and several letters mean two different decades depending on which era’s VIN you’re holding.

The letters I, O, and Q are always skipped because they’re too easily confused with 1 and 0. Only five characters, N, P, R, S, and T, are ambiguous between the two eras on their own; the WMI at positions 1-3 removes the ambiguity instantly, since JH4 never appears on a car newer than 2001 and 19U never appears on one older than 2022. We confirmed G (1986), L (1990), T (1996), and 1 (2001) directly against real classic-era VINs, and P (2023) and R (2024) against real revived-era VINs.

Both codes were confirmed directly against decoded VINs, not assumed. Because each era was built at a single plant, this position doesn’t discriminate the way it does on nameplates assembled at multiple factories; it mainly serves as a cross-check that positions 1-3 and 10 agree with each other.
Positions 12 to 17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence stamped on your specific car as it left the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Integra VIN globally unique, whether it’s a 1986 hatchback or a 2025 Type S.
