About the Audi A4

The A4 launched for 1994, replacing the Audi 80, and became Audi’s best-selling model worldwide for three decades. Audi tracks each generation with an internal “B” platform number and a factory type code, both common in parts-catalog references but never spelled out literally in the VIN:

The nameplate ends there for now. Audi discontinued the gas A4 after 2025, replacing it with the new A5 as part of a brand-wide switch to odd numbers for gas cars, even for EVs. Audi says “A4” returns on a future electric model, so a used A4 today means B5 through B9.

Audi A4 WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. These are the WMIs confirmed on real A4 VINs decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC:

Every A4 built for the US market has carried a German WMI; unlike the A3 or Q5, it has never been assembled outside Germany. Treat a VIN that doesn’t start with WAU or WA1 as suspect.

How to decode an Audi A4 VIN, position by position

Every A4 built for the US since the 1996 model year uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard.

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. Position 1 identifies the assembly country, not Audi’s headquarters, though for the A4 that has never mattered: every A4 has come out of Germany.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This is where Audi encodes body, engine, and restraint data, but not with one clean “engine code” character. We decoded real A4 and S4 VINs across all five generations, and the pattern holds: positions 7-8 stay fixed within a body style, while engine and trim differentiation lives in positions 4-6.

Notice the pattern: the 1.8T sedan and 3.0 V6 Avant both end in “8E”; the 2.0T sedan and 4.2 V8 S4 end in “8E” too; the 2.0T sedan and 3.0 turbo S4 end in “F4.” Position 8 alone doesn’t reveal the engine; the real differentiation sits in positions 4-6, so a decoder reads the whole VDS block against Audi’s build data rather than one digit.

US engines by generation: B5 ran 1.8T and 2.8/3.0 V6 (S4 got a 2.7T biturbo V6); B6 and B7 ran 1.8T/2.0T and 3.0/3.2 V6 (S4 to a 4.2 V8); B8 and B9 standardized on 2.0T/TFSI fours from the EA888 family, S4 on a supercharged then turbo 3.0 V6, with mild-hybrid assist on the B9’s 2020 facelift.

Europe also sold 1.9, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 TDI diesels across these generations; a US A4 TDI was planned for the B9 but cancelled before launch, so a US A4 has never been a diesel. European A4 VINs often carry placeholder “ZZZ” at positions 4-6, since the check digit at position 9 is a US/Canada titling requirement, not a global one.

Position 9: Check digit

Calculated from the other 16 characters using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math, the check digit catches typos. Every VIN used in this guide decoded clean; a single mistyped character anywhere breaks the math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on a repeating 30-year cycle shared industry-wide:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used, since they’re easy to confuse with 1 and 0. Because the cycle repeats, a “B” could mean 1981 or 2011; no A4 existed in 1981, so context settles which cycle applies.

Position 11: Assembly plant

A single character narrows the VIN to a specific factory, useful on the A4 since the sedan and Avant/S4 haven’t always shared a plant:

Every B5 through B7 A4 we decoded, sedan or Avant, came from Ingolstadt. Starting with the B8, the standard sedan shifted to Neckarsulm while the Avant, allroad, and S4 stayed at Ingolstadt, a split that held through the B9. A B8 or B9 sedan showing “A” instead of “N” is likely an S4, not a base A4.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence stamped on your specific A4 as it left the line, making the full 17-character string unique to that one car.

A4 trim levels by generation

A VIN doesn’t spell out the trim name directly; a decoder reconstructs it from the VDS plus Audi’s build records. US trim lineups by generation:

• B5: 1.8T, 2.8 (later 3.0), Avant, quattro, S4
• B6: 1.8T, 3.0, Avant, Cabriolet, S4 (4.2 V8)

Where to find the VIN on an Audi A4

• Lower-left corner of the windshield, visible from outside the car
• Driver’s side door jamb (Audi data sticker with VIN, paint code, and equipment codes)
• Stamped on the engine bay firewall/bulkhead
• Vehicle title, registration, and (for European buyers) the Certificate of Conformity

The windshield and door jamb are fastest to check on a lot. The firewall stamp, physically tied to the body shell, is the one to check if you suspect the other labels were swapped.

Two campaigns stand out for the number of A4s they touched:

• Takata airbags, campaign 18V-427 (2005-2008 B7 sedan and Avant): roughly 238,000 A4s recalled for a passenger frontal airbag inflator that could rupture in a crash, part of the industry-wide Takata program.
• Coolant pump fire risk, campaign 17V-002 (2013-2016 B8 A4, plus A5, A6, Q5): the electric coolant pump could short or overheat, raising fire risk. Audi issued a software fix, then a hardware pump replacement from 2018.
