We verified this plant and generation history against real VINs decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC system: a 1995 A6 2.8 quattro sedan (WAUGA84A9SN112764), a 1999 A6 Avant (WAUDA24B8XN028533), a 2006 A6 Avant 3.2 quattro (WAUKH74F16N157540), a 2011 A6 3.0T sedan (WAUKGAFB4BN058649), a 2016 A6 TDI sedan (WAUHMAFC0GN013324), a 2019 A6 Premium sedan (WAUK2AF2XKN035505), and a 2024 A6 sedan (WAUK3BF23RN044530) all decoded to Neckarsulm, Germany, the same plant that built the Audi 100 before it and Audi’s second major German factory alongside Ingolstadt.
The Avant wagon disappeared from the US lineup after the 2011 model year (the last C6 model year); Audi went without a US-market A6 wagon body until the A6 allroad quattro returned for 2020 on the C8. Worth noting for A6 owners specifically: unlike the Audi A4 allroad, which carries a distinct WA1 WMI, every A6 allroad VIN we decoded, including a 2020 (WAU92BF26LN081726) and a 2025 (WAU92BF24SN011821), still starts with the standard WAU prefix.
US engines by generation: the C4 carried over the Audi 100’s 2.8L V6 (plus a 2.2L turbo five on the S4/S6-adjacent cars); the C5 and C6 ran 2.7T and 3.0L/3.2L V6 engines, with the S6 moving from a 4.2L V8 (C5) to a 5.2L V10 (C6); the C7 standardized on a supercharged, then turbocharged, 3.0L V6, plus a 3.0L TDI turbodiesel V6 sold in the US from 2014 until Volkswagen Group’s 2015-2016 diesel emissions scandal ended US diesel sales; the C8 runs a 2.0L turbo four (2.0T) and a 3.0L turbo V6 (3.0T), both with mild-hybrid assist from the 2022 facelift onward.
The Audi A6 e-tron
For 2025, Audi added a fully electric A6 e-tron, built on the Volkswagen Group’s PPE platform shared with the Q6 e-tron. It comes in Sportback (5-door liftback) and Avant body styles in Europe, but only the Sportback is sold in the US. We decoded a real 2025 US-spec A6 e-tron Sportback VIN, WAU2CAGHXSA024267, a 375-hp Premium Plus model, and it reveals the one meaningful production difference from the gas A6: the plant code at position 11 comes back A for Ingolstadt, not N for Neckarsulm. Every gas or diesel A6 we decoded across five generations came from Neckarsulm; the e-tron is the first A6 variant built at Audi’s other German plant instead.
Audi A6 WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. Every US-market A6 VIN we decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC, spanning 1995 through 2025 and every body style including the allroad and the e-tron, starts the same way:

Unlike the Audi A4, whose allroad wears a separate WA1 WMI, the A6 allroad quattro has never departed from WAU in any VIN we decoded. Treat an A6 VIN that doesn’t start with WAU as suspect.
How to decode an Audi A6 VIN, position by position
Every A6 built for the US since the 1994 model year uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard.
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. Position 1 (W) marks Germany as the country of assembly. For nearly every A6 sold in the US, that has meant one specific German factory, not just the country generally; the plant character at position 11 narrows it further.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where Audi encodes body, engine, and restraint data, but not with one clean “engine code” character. We decoded real A6, Avant, allroad, and e-tron VINs across every generation, and the pattern holds: positions 4-8 move together as a block rather than isolating the engine to a single digit.

Notice that the C4’s 2.8 quattro sedan carries the identical GA84A block on both a 1995 and a 1997 car, two years apart, while the C8 shifts its VDS block for nearly every trim and engine change. Feed the full VIN into the decoder above rather than reading the engine off a single character; the real differentiation sits across the whole 4-8 block plus Audi’s build data.
Position 9: Check digit
Calculated from the other 16 characters using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math, the check digit catches typos. Every VIN in this guide decoded clean against NHTSA’s system, including VINs whose check digit resolved to the letter X (representing 10) rather than a single number. A single mistyped character anywhere else in the string breaks the math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on the industry-wide 30-year cycle defined by ISO 3779, scoped here to the full run of the Audi A6 since 1994:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used, since they’re easily confused with 1 and 0. Because this table spans slightly more than one 30-year cycle, three characters repeat within it: R (1994 and again 2024), S (1995 and again 2025), and T (1996 and again 2026). We confirmed both instances of R and S directly: a 1995 A6 decoded S, a 2025 A6 allroad and a 2025 A6 e-tron both also decoded S, and a 2024 A6 decoded R. Since the A6 has existed continuously since 1994, position 10 alone can’t tell a 1995 car from a 2025 one; check the VDS block or the plant character for context, or just let the decoder above sort it out.
Position 11: Assembly plant
A single character narrows the VIN to a specific factory. For the gas and diesel A6, this has been remarkably consistent:

Every non-electric A6 VIN we decoded, sedan, Avant, or allroad, spanning 1995 to 2024, came back Neckarsulm. The A6 e-tron is the exception: it comes from Ingolstadt, Audi’s larger, original German plant, since Neckarsulm’s EV conversion has been a longer-term project rather than something already built out for this model.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence stamped on your specific A6 as it left the line, making the full 17-character string unique to that one car.
Where to find the VIN on an Audi A6
- Lower-left corner of the windshield, visible from outside the car
- Driver’s side door jamb (Audi data sticker with VIN, paint code, and equipment codes)
- Stamped on the engine bay firewall/bulkhead
- Vehicle title, registration, and, on European-market cars, the Certificate of Conformity
