About the Audi A7

The Audi A7 is the five-door “Sportback” liftback companion to the A6 sedan. It shares the A6’s platform, interior architecture, and most of its engine range, wrapped in a frameless-window fastback body that Audi has sold in the US since the 2012 model year. Two generations have made it to American dealerships:

There is no 2018 A7 sold in the US. The second generation launched in Europe in late 2017 but did not reach American showrooms until the 2019 model year, so the lineup jumps straight from 2017 first-gen cars to 2019 second-gen cars.

Because the A7 and A6 ride on the same chassis and share most powertrains, a VIN does not spell out “sedan” versus “Sportback” as a separate code the way a trim name would. What actually separates them in a decode is the vehicle body class: NHTSA data returns “Sedan/Saloon” for the A6 and, somewhat counterintuitively, also for the first-generation A7, while the second-generation A7 decodes as “Hatchback/Liftback/Notchback.” The reliable way to tell an A7 from an A6 by VIN is the Model field itself, not the body class alone. Audi A7 WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. These are the WMIs confirmed on real A7, S7, and RS7 VINs decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC:

Every A7 built for the US market carries one of these two prefixes. WUA is worth knowing on its own: it is Audi’s dedicated WMI for cars built under the Audi Sport GmbH badge (the RS lineup), separate from the standard WAU code used on the rest of the range. A VIN claiming to be an RS7 but starting with WAU, or an A7/S7 starting with WUA, is worth a second look.

How to decode an Audi A7 VIN, position by position

Every A7 sold in the US since the 2012 model year uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard.

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. Position 1 identifies the assembly country, not Audi’s headquarters location by itself, though for the A7 the two have always lined up: every A7, S7, and RS7 we found has come out of Germany.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This is where Audi encodes body, engine, and restraint data, but not as one clean “engine code” digit. We decoded real A7, S7, and RS7 VINs across both generations, and the block of five characters at positions 4-8 shifts together with the drivetrain rather than any single position carrying the whole story:

The pattern to notice: within a generation, the last two or three characters of this block (FC, or F2 on the newer cars) recur across very different engines, while the earlier characters shift with body, trim, and drivetrain. No single digit in positions 4-8 reads as “the engine code” on its own; a decoder has to weigh the whole five-character block against Audi’s build data, which is exactly what the tool at the top of this page does automatically.

US-market engines by generation: the 1st-gen A7 ran a supercharged 3.0T V6 (gaining a mild power bump for 2016) plus a 3.0 TDI V6 diesel sold only for 2014 and 2015 before Audi pulled US diesels from the lineup; the S7 and RS7 both used a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 throughout the generation, with RS7 Performance models pushing past 600 horsepower late in the run. The 2nd-gen A7 standardized on a 3.0T turbo V6 with mild-hybrid assist, added a 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid variant for MY2021, moved the S7 to a smaller but still potent 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 shared with other Volkswagen Group performance models, and kept the RS7 on its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.

Position 9: Check digit

Calculated from the other 16 characters using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math, the check digit catches typos. Every VIN used in this guide decoded clean; a single mistyped character anywhere breaks the math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on a repeating 30-year cycle shared industry-wide:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used, since they are easy to confuse with 1 and 0. This 30-year window (2010-2026 above) covers every A7 sold to date; the cycle will repeat starting with A again in 2040, so a decoder always checks the character against a plausible production window rather than reading it in isolation.

Position 11: Assembly plant

A single character narrows the VIN to a specific factory. On the A7, this position has never varied:

Unlike some platform-mates that have been built at more than one German site, every US-market A7 we found, base A7, diesel TDI, S7, or RS7, traces back to the same factory: Neckarsulm, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. That plant also builds the A6, A8, and A5 Cabriolet, so a Neckarsulm VIN alone does not distinguish an A7 from its siblings; the Model field from the decode does that. We found no evidence of A7 assembly at Audi’s Győr, Hungary site, which builds TT and A3 sedan bodies plus engines but not the A7.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence stamped on your specific car as it left the line, making the full 17-character string unique to that one A7, S7, or RS7.

Where to find the VIN on an Audi A7

• Lower-left corner of the windshield, visible from outside the car
• Driver’s side door jamb (Audi data sticker with VIN, paint code, and equipment codes)
• Stamped on the engine bay firewall/bulkhead
• Vehicle title, registration, and insurance card

The windshield and door jamb are fastest to check on a lot or in a driveway. The firewall stamp, physically tied to the body shell, is the one to check if you suspect the other labels were swapped after an accident repair or a salvage rebuild.

The A7 has been part of several NHTSA campaigns, most of them shared with its A6 and S6/RS6 platform-mates rather than unique to this body style:

• Passenger seat air bag sensor, campaign 18V-370 (2012-2018 A7, 2013-2018 S6 and S7, 2014-2018 RS7): stress or wear inside the front passenger seat’s occupant-detection mat could cause the sensor module to malfunction, so the front passenger air bag might not deploy properly in a crash. Audi’s dealer fix installs a repair kit into the seat.
• Head curtain air bag, campaign 17V-293 (2015-2017 A7): affected cars had head curtain air bags that could fail to deploy correctly, falling short of the federal ejection-mitigation standard. Audi replaced the affected air bags free of charge.
