Here’s the honest picture, checked against real decoded VINs rather than assumed: Audi does not isolate the engine to a single character at position 8 on the Q5. Positions 4 through 8 move together as a block, and engine plus trim is read from the whole block, not one digit:

• On the 8R, WA1LFAFP0CA004855 (2012 2.0T Premium Plus) and WA1CGAFP2EA038599 (2014 SQ5 3.0T supercharged) both carry P at position 8, and WA1CMAFP3EA005071 (2014 3.0 TDI diesel Premium Plus) carries it too. The differentiator is positions 4-5 (LF vs CG vs CM), not position 8.
• On the FY and current generation, position 8 reads Y on nearly everything decoded, from base 2.0T Premium Plus (WA1BNAFY6K2075526) to Q5 e PHEV (WA1E2AFY2M2045741) to SQ5 (WA1B4AFYXM2031017).
