That last row is worth flagging: unlike the 1500, whose chassis code changed from DS to DT for its 2019 redesign, the 2500’s “5th generation Heavy Duty” kept the DJ code it had carried since 2010. Two notes. First, the WMI’s registered manufacturer name says “Toluca,” but every 2500 we decoded, from a 1998 truck through a 2022 truck, actually came out of Saltillo (one 1998 example came from Mexico City). The WMI records the corporate registration, not the specific factory; position 11 does that job, covered below. Second, there’s no US-built WMI for a modern 2500. The 1500 is built in Michigan; the 2500 and up come exclusively from Saltillo, so every current 2500 VIN starts with 3C6, never 1C6.
How to decode a Ram 2500 VIN, position by position
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
Covered above. A 2500 VIN starting with anything other than 3C6, 3D7, or 1D7 is either a different Stellantis product or worth double-checking with the decoder above.
Position 4: Brake system and GVWR class
Position 4 encodes gross vehicle weight rating combined with brake and restraint system, all hydraulic-braked on the 2500. Real 2500 VINs we decoded return “U” (9,001-10,000 lb GVWR) most often, with heavier Cummins/Crew Cab builds landing on “3” (10,001-14,000 lb). It’s the same GVWR-and-restraint code table FCA uses across its whole truck and MPV lineup, not something unique to the 2500.
Positions 5-7: Model line, cab, and drivetrain
This block spells out the model, cab style (Regular, Crew, or Mega Cab), wheelbase, drive wheels (2WD or 4WD), and trim series. On a DJ-era truck, “R5K” reads as a 4×4 Crew Cab, long wheelbase, Laramie; “R5P” reads as a 4×4 Mega Cab Longhorn. You don’t need to memorize the sub-codes; the decoder above reads them for you.
Position 8: Engine code
This is where the 2500’s VIN departs from a simple “one letter, one engine” chart. FCA reuses position-8 characters across generations for different engines: the letter “6” decodes to the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins ISB diesel on a checksum-valid 1998 VIN, but to the 5.7L HEMI gas V8 on a 2006 VIN, both verified through vPIC. Match the code to the generation, not just the letter.

Position 9: Check digit
