Unlike some manufacturers, Toyota does not spell the platform code directly into the 17-character VIN the way a handful of other automakers do with their own model lines. The XA10 through XA60 designations above are Toyota’s own generation names, useful for talking about the car and for cross-referencing parts, but they won’t appear as literal characters in positions 4 to 6. How to decode a Toyota RAV4 VIN, position by position
Every RAV4 built since 1994 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. The string breaks into three blocks, and each character carries specific meaning.
Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the table above. The first character identifies the country of assembly (J for Japan, 2 for Canada, 4 for the USA), the second identifies the manufacturer, and the third narrows down the vehicle class or plant. A Kentucky-built RAV4 always starts 4T3; a Japan-built RAV4 Prime always starts JTM. The country code identifies the factory, not the brand’s headquarters, so a Canadian-built RAV4 is still a Toyota even though its VIN never starts with a J.
Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where things differ from some other brands. Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the one character in the VIN that catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. Mistype a single character anywhere in the VIN and the math no longer matches; NHTSA’s own decoder flags it immediately with an error rather than a result. Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on a 30-year cycle, standard across every manufacturer:

Position 11: Assembly plant

Positions 12 to 17: Serial number

Where to find the VIN on a Toyota RAV4
Four locations on every modern RAV4, plus the paperwork:
