The internal chassis code (XV10 through XV80) is Toyota’s own shorthand and doesn’t appear literally in the VIN, but the Vehicle Descriptor Section at positions 4 to 8 does encode the platform variant, body, and restraint system that map back to it. A 2020 Camry SE and a 1996 Camry LE will never share a VDS pattern, and that’s what a decoder is reading when it names the generation.

Toyota Camry WMI codes (positions 1 to 3)

The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. Nearly every US-market Camry, from the 1992 model year to the current one, carries one WMI:

How to decode a Toyota Camry VIN, position by position

Every Camry built since 1992 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. The string breaks into three blocks, and each character carries specific meaning.

Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the one character in the VIN that catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. The letters I, O, and Q are skipped because they look like 1 and 0. The cycle repeats every 30 years, so a decoder cross-references the chassis code at positions 4 to 8 (no XV80 existed in 1996) to know which pass through the alphabet it’s reading.

Where to find the VIN on a Toyota Camry
