The Mexico-market B13 kept selling as the Nissan Tsuru long after the US Sentra moved on, staying in production at Aguascalientes until 2017. Since the B16 generation, Aguascalientes has been the only plant building the Sentra for any market, which is why nearly every used Sentra from 2007 onward carries a Mexico-built VIN.

How to decode a Nissan Sentra VIN, position by position
Every Sentra built since the 1982 model year uses the 17-character ISO 3779 format.
Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the table above. The first character marks the country of assembly, not the brand’s headquarters: a Sentra assembled in Aguascalientes is still built by Nissan, but its VIN starts with 3N1, not JN1.
Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Here’s where honesty matters more than a tidy chart. On some Nissan-family vehicles, a single VDS character cleanly isolates the engine. The Sentra does not work that way. Notice position 8 alone reads P for the 2010 2.0L, the 2013 1.8L, and the 2017 1.6L turbo alike; it is not the engine flag. The real split between the 1.8L base engine and the 1.6L turbo on the same B17 generation shows up at position 4 (A versus C), one character earlier than you might expect. Position 9: Check digit
A single character computed from the other 16 using SAE’s modulo-11 weighting formula. Change any other character in the VIN and this digit stops matching, which is why a mistyped VIN gets rejected by state DMVs and the NHTSA recall lookup rather than silently returning the wrong car.
Position 10: Model year

I, O, Q, U, and Z are skipped so they can’t be confused with numerals. The cycle repeats every 30 years, so P meant 1993 and means 2023 again; the WMI and chassis code tell you which pass you’re on (no B18 existed in 1993).
Position 11: Assembly plant

NHTSA’s public data doesn’t distinguish which of Nissan’s two Aguascalientes assembly complexes (known internally as A1 and A2) a given letter maps to, so both L and Y are listed simply as Aguascalientes here rather than guessed at further.
Positions 12 to 17: Serial number
The final six digits are the production sequence number for that specific car. Combined with the first 11 characters, they make every Sentra VIN unique, even for two cars built the same week on the same line.

Nissan Sentra recalls and safety
