The Rogue Select is the quirk most owners have never heard of. When the redesigned T32 launched for 2014, Nissan kept building the outgoing first-generation S35 body alongside it, badged as “Rogue Select,” to hold a lower price point (under $20,000) while the new generation ramped up. It ran for the 2014 and 2015 model years only and shares the S35’s VIN structure, chassis, and single QR25DE engine. If you’re decoding an older Rogue and the decoder returns “Rogue Select” instead of “Rogue,” that’s not an error: it’s a genuine, separate model name Nissan used for those two years.
Nissan Rogue WMI codes
The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier. On a Rogue, the WMI plus the first VDS character (position 4) together tell you country of build and, on the newest generation, which engine family is under the hood:

Note that the first-generation S35 was never built in Smyrna; every 2008-2013 Rogue and every 2014-2015 Rogue Select carries a JN8A prefix. Smyrna production only began with the second generation. How to decode a Nissan Rogue VIN, position by position
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
JN8 identifies a Japan-built Nissan light truck/SUV (Kyushu plant). 5N1 identifies a US-built Nissan light truck/SUV (Smyrna plant). The country code tells you where the car was assembled, not where it was designed or sold; a Smyrna-built Rogue is identical in spec to a Kyushu-built one of the same trim.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where the Rogue’s history gets genuinely interesting, and where a decoder has to be honest rather than tidy. Real VIN decodes show the following:
On the S35 and T32 generations, only one engine was ever offered (the QR25DE 2.5L four-cylinder, aside from the low-volume T32 Hybrid described below), so the VDS doesn’t need to flag engine choice. Instead, position 8 cleanly flags drivetrain, verified across dozens of real listings:

The third-generation T33 is different: it actually launched two distinct engine families, and Nissan flags that choice at position 4, not position 8:

On the T33, drivetrain and trim are combined across positions 7-8 instead of isolated to a single character (a base S-trim VIN we decoded read AB at 7-8, an SV-trim VIN read BA or BB), so there isn’t a single clean drivetrain letter the way there is on S35/T32. One more wrinkle worth knowing: the T32 generation briefly offered a Rogue Hybrid (2017-2019 model years) pairing a 2.0L supercharged direct-injection gas engine with a 30 kW electric motor for a combined 176 hp. It sold in small numbers (under 6,000 units across three years) and was dropped after 2019; if you’re decoding a T32-era VIN that doesn’t match a plain QR25DE, this is likely why.
Position 9: Check digit
A single character, calculated from the other 16 using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math, that catches typos. Change one character anywhere else in the VIN and the check digit no longer matches, which is why NHTSA’s system, state DMVs, and any compliant decoder will reject a mistyped VIN outright.
Position 10: Model year
Every VIN, regardless of make, uses the same 30-year repeating cycle for this character:

I, O, and Q are skipped because they’re easily confused with 1 and 0. For a Rogue, the letter is unambiguous since no Rogue existed before 2008, so you never need the older half of the cycle.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The Rogue’s most significant recent recall campaign came in February 2026, when Nissan recalled nearly 643,000 Rogue SUVs from the 2023-2025 model years equipped with the 1.5L VC-Turbo engine.
