The chassis code doesn’t sit in the VIN as a literal substring the way it does on some models. Instead, the combination of the model-line character at position 4, the model year at position 10, and the engine character at position 8 is what lets a decoder tell an HD from an AD. Position 9: Check digit

The letters I, O, and Q are skipped because they look like 1 and 0.
