About the BMW 4 Series

The 4 Series is not an original nameplate. Through 2013, the two-door coupe and convertible versions of the BMW 3 Series were sold and badged simply as 3 Series (the E92 coupe, the E93 convertible). Starting with model year 2014, BMW split those body styles off into a separate 4 Series line built on the same F30 platform as the contemporary 3 Series sedan. The coupe became the F32, the convertible the F33, and BMW added a four-door fastback, the F36 Gran Coupe, as a genuinely new body style with no direct 3 Series equivalent. The M version followed the same split: the E92 M3 coupe’s replacement became the M4, not a two-door M3.

Because the 4 Series descends directly from the 3 Series, its VIN structure and WMI codes largely mirror what we verified on the BMW 3 Series VIN decoder page, with one notable exception: unlike the 3 Series, the 4 Series has never been built in Mexico. San Luis Potosi builds the 3 Series sedan, the 2 Series Coupe, and the M2, but every 4 Series VIN we decoded, across both generations and all three body styles, traces back to a German plant.

BMW 4 Series WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. These are the WMIs confirmed on real 4 Series VINs decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC database:

We did not find, and BMW has not assigned, a 3MW (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) WMI for any 4 Series variant. That code is real and confirmed on the 3 Series and X3 pages, but it does not apply here. How to decode a BMW 4 Series VIN, position by position

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the table above. Position 1 (W) identifies Germany as the country of assembly for every genuine 4 Series built to date.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This is the block that trips up manual decoding, and we’d rather be honest about that than invent a tidy table. Across the VINs we decoded for both generations, BMW spreads body style, drivetrain, and engine across positions 4 through 8 as a combined block that shifts meaning between generations rather than holding to one fixed character-to-fact mapping.

On the F32/F33/F36 generation (2014-2020), position 4 tends to read 3 on two-door 428i, 435i, and M4 cars but 4 on Gran Coupe variants of the same engine, for example a 2015 435i coupe (WBA3R1C51FK194547) against the same year’s 435i xDrive Gran Coupe (WBA4B3C53FD670211). Position 5 then varies with body and drivetrain within that: we confirmed W on 430i coupes, Z on 430i convertibles, J on 430i xDrive Gran Coupes, R on 435i xDrive coupes and M4 coupes, T on 435i convertibles, U on M4 convertibles, and B on 435i Gran Coupes. Position 6 shifts with drivetrain even within the same body: a 2018 430i RWD coupe (WBA4W3C54JAE64851) reads 3 at position 6, while the xDrive version of the same coupe (WBA4W5C51JAA49434) reads 5.

On the G22/G23/G26 generation (2021-present), the pattern resets again. We decoded 73AP at positions 4-7 on a 2024 430i xDrive coupe, 23AT on a 2024 430i convertible, 43AT on a 2023 430i xDrive convertible, 63AV on 430i Gran Coupes, and 13AR on a 2021 M440i xDrive coupe. Position 7 in particular looks like the closest thing to a body-style flag on the current generation: V showed up only on Gran Coupes, T only on convertibles, P and R on coupes.

The honest takeaway, consistent with what we found on the 3 Series and X5 pages: there is no single VIN position that reliably spells out “engine” or “body” by itself on a BMW. Decode the full VIN with the tool above rather than reading one character in isolation.

Position 9: Check digit

Calculated from the other 16 characters using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math. A single mistyped character anywhere in the VIN breaks this math, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will reject it. Every VIN used to verify this page passed NHTSA’s check-digit validation.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on the industry-wide 30-year cycle. For a 4 Series, which has only existed since 2014, here’s the relevant stretch:

We confirmed several of these directly against real decoded VINs: F decoded to model year 2015 on a 435i, J to 2018 on a 430i, M to 2021 on an M440i, N to 2022 on a 430i Gran Coupe, P to 2023 on a 430i Gran Coupe, and R to 2024 on a 430i xDrive coupe. The letters I, O, and Q are never used, since they’re too easily confused with 1 and 0. Past 2030 the cycle rolls into digits (1 for 2031, 2 for 2032, and so on) but no 4 Series has reached that point yet.

Position 11: Assembly plant

A single character narrows the VIN to a specific factory, and here we found a genuinely interesting flip between generations. On the F32/F33/F36 cars, the coupe was built in Munich, the convertible in Regensburg, and the Gran Coupe in Dingolfing. On the current G22/G23/G26 generation, that assignment reversed for two of the three body styles: the coupe and convertible moved to Dingolfing, while the Gran Coupe moved to Munich.

BMW does not keep one letter permanently tied to one factory across the brand’s whole lineup; both the 3 Series and X5 pages document the same rotation. Cross-reference the full VIN with the decoder above rather than assuming a single character always means the same plant.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six digits are the production sequence for that specific car. Combined with everything before it, this makes every 4 Series VIN globally unique, even two identical M440i xDrive coupes built the same week at the same plant.

4 Series trim levels by generation

A VIN doesn’t spell out the trim name directly; it’s reconstructed from the VDS block plus the factory build sheet. US-market 4 Series trims by generation:

  • F32/F33/F36 (2014-2016): 428i, 428i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive, all three body styles
  • F32/F33/F36 (2017-2020): 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive, all three body styles
  • F82/F83 (2015-2020): M4, M4 competition package, M4 GTS (2016, limited coupe run), M4 CS (2018, limited)
  • G22/G23/G26 (2021-present): 430i, 430i xDrive, M440i, M440i xDrive, all three body styles
  • G82/G83 (2021-present): M4, M4 Competition, M4 CS (limited), M4 CSL (extremely limited coupe run)

A few notable NHTSA campaigns across the 4 Series’s run so far:

  • Takata airbag inflators, front driver side (campaign 24V527000): BMW recalled a wide range of 2013-2016 vehicles including 2015 428i and 435i convertibles for the industry-wide Takata inflator rupture risk.
  • Front seat belt retractors (campaign 17V507000, MY2018 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive, M4 convertible): the emergency locking retractor in the front seat belts could fail to lock properly in a crash.
  • Rear driveshaft connection (campaign 18V713000, MY2016-2017 M4 and M4 GTS coupes, MY2017 M4 convertible): the connection between the driveshaft and the transmission output flange could loosen during servicing, risking a loss of drive.
  • Panoramic sunroof (campaign 22V267000, MY2022 4 Series Gran Coupe 430i/430i xDrive/M440i xDrive): the sunroof glass could detach while driving.
  • Body control module software (campaign 23V118000, MY2022-2023 430i, 430i xDrive, M440i xDrive): a software issue that could affect various vehicle functions controlled by the body control module.

Is the BMW 4 Series just a 3 Series coupe?

It used to be. Through model year 2013, the two-door coupe and convertible were sold as 3 Series (E92 and E93). Starting with model year 2014, BMW spun those body styles off as their own 4 Series nameplate, sharing the F30 platform underneath but marketed, badged, and decoded separately. A pre-2014 BMW coupe or convertible decodes as a 3 Series; a 2014-or-newer one decodes as a 4 Series, even though the engineering lineage is the same car. What’s the difference between an F32 and a G22?

F32/F33/F36 is the first 4 Series generation, built 2014 to 2020 on the F30 3 Series platform. G22/G23/G26 is the current generation, launched for 2021 on BMW’s newer CLAR platform shared with the G20 3 Series. The VIN doesn’t spell out “F32” or “G22” literally; you get there by combining the WMI, the VDS block at positions 4-8, and the model year at position 10, which is what the decoder above does automatically.

Where is the VIN on a BMW 4 Series?

The two easiest spots are the lower-left corner of the windshield (read from outside the car) and the driver-side door jamb sticker. Both are required by federal labeling regulation. The strut tower stamp under the hood is the one to check if you suspect the windshield or door labels were swapped.

Was the BMW 4 Series ever built in Mexico?

Can a BMW 4 Series VIN be faked?

The 17 characters can be retyped on a counterfeit plate, but the check digit at position 9 catches nearly all single-character tampering through math, and the strut-tower stamp is physically tied to the original car.
