Two gaps matter if you are shopping used. Audi sold no A3 in the US for the 2014 model year, the changeover between the outgoing 8P hatchback and the redesigned 8V sedan/cabriolet. It sold none for 2021 either, the gap between the 8V’s US exit and the 2022 launch of the 8Y sedan. If a private seller claims a “2014 Audi A3” or “2021 Audi A3” bought new in the States, that claim does not hold up; decode the VIN above to see what year it actually is.
The first-generation 8L (1996-2003) never came to the US, so there is no NHTSA vPIC data to verify against for that generation, and every VIN we found for it uses the “ZZZ” placeholder pattern common on European-market Audis, where the position 9 check digit is a North American titling requirement, not a global one. Unlike the A4, which splits between WAU and WA1 for the raised-suspension allroad, every US-market A3 we could verify used WAU, whether it was assembled in Germany or Hungary. Position 1 identifies the country where the VIN was assigned, not necessarily the specific factory; positions 4-11 carry the rest of that detail. A VIN claiming to be an A3 that does not start with WAU should be treated as suspect.

This is where body, engine, and restraint data live, though not as one clean “engine code” character. Notice that the 2016 and 2018 Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid share the identical UPBFF block despite being two model years apart, because the VDS encodes drivetrain and body, and the year lives in position 10 instead. The front-drive and quattro versions of the current 8Y sedan differ by a single character (A versus G at position 4), which is the kind of detail a full VIN decode catches and a human skimming the sticker often misses.
US A3 engines by generation: the 8P ran a 200 hp 2.0T FSI four as the mainstay, briefly offered a 3.2L VR6 quattro (2006-2008), and added a 2.0L TDI diesel four for 2010-2013. The 8V ran 1.8T and 2.0T FSI/TFSI fours, plus a 2.0L TDI for 2015 only before Audi pulled diesel from the US lineup after the Volkswagen Group emissions settlement; the Sportback e-tron paired a 1.4T four with an electric motor for a combined 204 hp. The 8Y standardized on a single 2.0T (badged “40 TFSI”) four, offered with front-wheel or quattro all-wheel drive. Position 9: Check digit

Position 10: Model year

The letters I, O, and Q are never used, since they are easy to confuse with 1 and 0. The cycle repeats every 30 years, so “T” appears twice on this table: once for 1996 and again for 2026. That ambiguity does not actually bite on a US-market A3, since Audi did not sell one here until 2006; a “T” on a US A3 title always means 2026, never 1996. Every model year VIN we decoded above, from the 2006 wagon (6) to the 2025 sedan (S), matched this table exactly against NHTSA’s own decode.
Position 11: Assembly plant
A single character narrows the VIN to a specific factory. This is where the A3’s history gets interesting, since Audi has split production between Germany and Hungary depending on body style and generation:

Every 8P hatchback and every 8Y sedan VIN we decoded came from Ingolstadt, Audi’s home plant. The 8V generation split the work: the gasoline Sedan and Cabriolet we decoded were built at Audi Hungaria in Győr, which began full-vehicle A3 production in October 2013, while the Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid stayed at Ingolstadt. If you are cross-shopping a 2015-2020 A3 sedan or cabriolet and the seller insists it was “made in Germany,” a VIN starting with plant code 1 says otherwise, though the car is no less genuine for it.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence stamped on your specific A3 as it left the line, making the full 17-character string unique to that one car.
