The 33 was replaced in 1994-1995 by the unrelated 145 and 146 hatchbacks, which reused the boxer engines briefly before switching to Twin Spark inline-fours; both were also built at Pomigliano d’Arco.

We verified this two ways. First, real listings carry it: a 1985 33 1.5 Quadrifoglio Verde (VIN ZAR905A2005119090, Classic Trader), a 1988 33 1.5 4×4 Sport Wagon (VIN ZAR905A2005416802, RM Sotheby’s Open Roads, February 2021), and a 1993 33 1.3L Imola (VIN ZAR90700005891989, a private US import documented on Classic.com). Second, running each VIN through NHTSA’s public vPIC decoder returns “ALFA ROMEO S.P.A.” for the ZAR prefix, confirming NHTSA has the WMI on file even though it holds essentially no other data on a European-market 33.
We are not listing any WMI beyond ZAR. Some reference sites mention other historical Alfa Romeo prefixes, but repeating one here without a real 33 VIN to back it up would be a guess, and this page does not guess.
How to read a VIN: position by position
The 33’s 17-character VIN nominally follows the international ISO 3779 standard. In practice, a European-built 33 does not fill in every position the way a car built for US federal compliance would, so this section shows what real cars actually carry rather than an invented, fully-working table.
Positions 1-3: WMI

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Positions 4-6 carry Alfa Romeo’s internal type code: 905 on our two first-series examples (a 1985 QV berlina and a 1988 4×4 Sport Wagon) and 907 on our second-series example (a 1993 Imola), matching the documented type designations. That makes positions 4-6 a genuine, checkable way to tell a first-series 33 from a second-series “Nuova” from the VIN alone.
We cannot confirm what positions 7-8 encode. Our two Type 905 examples both read “A2” despite different body styles built three years apart; the Type 907 example reads “00.” With only three real VINs to compare, we would rather admit that gap than guess. NHTSA’s decoder flags positions 4 through 8 as “unused” for the same reason.
Position 9: Check digit
In North America, position 9 is a mathematically calculated check digit required under 49 CFR 565, used to catch transcription errors. A European-market 33 was never built to that regulation. In all three real VINs we examined, position 9 reads 0, and NHTSA’s decoder confirms it: “Check Digit (9th position) does not calculate properly.” Do not expect a 33’s 9th character to validate against the standard formula.
Position 10: Model year
This is where honesty matters most. Under the SAE/ISO 30-year cyclic scheme used on North American vehicles, position 10 is a single letter or digit mapped to model year. Here is the standard table for the years the 33 was built:

Here is the honest catch: in all three real VINs we found, spanning 1985, 1988, and 1993, position 10 reads 0, not a letter from the table above. NHTSA’s decoder flags this directly, returning error 11: “Incorrect Model Year – Position 10 does not match valid model year codes.” That is not a typo across three separate sources; it is what Alfa Romeo actually stamped. European manufacturers of this era were not bound by the US model-year-letter convention, a US federal requirement rather than a mandatory part of ISO 3779 itself. Confirm the year from the libretto (Italian registration document), the build plate, or a marque specialist instead.
Position 11: Assembly plant
All three real VINs carry the digit 5 in position 11, spanning both series and, given the body styles involved, potentially both the Pomigliano d’Arco and Pininfarina Grugliasco lines. Alfa Romeo never published a public plant-code table for this era, so treat “5” as an observed, consistent pattern, not a documented, confirmed plant code.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the sequential production number: 119090, 416802, and 891989 in our three examples, each unique to that car. Combined with the WMI and VDS, this is what makes each 33 VIN unique, even though the middle carries less standardized information than a US-market car would.
Where to find the VIN
On a 33, expect the chassis number stamped into metal, not just printed on a removable sticker:
- Stamped into the bulkhead or on a plate under the hood, near a front suspension strut mounting
- Etched into the passenger-side corner of the windscreen on many examples, though not universally
- Printed on the libretto (Italian registration document) or, for a UK-registered car, the V5C logbook
- Repeated on a data/build plate in the engine bay, which also lists paint and equipment codes
Because the 33 was never sold new in the US, there is no federally mandated dashboard VIN plate visible through the windshield. On a US-based import, check the strut area and firewall stamp against the import paperwork rather than expecting a windshield sticker.
