Two honest caveats. Every real 720S VIN we located starts at model-year code J (2018), even though McLaren dates the car to 2017 and NHTSA’s recall filings reference “2016-2020 720S” vehicles; more under Position 10 below. And NHTSA’s decoder does not resolve the 765LT down to model name, displacement, or power. It correctly returns the make and model year on every 765LT VIN we checked, but the “Model” field comes back blank, a gap in how the car was submitted rather than a sign it doesn’t exist; the 755 hp figure above is McLaren’s own published number.

Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where body style separates out. Positions 4, 5, 7, and 8 stayed constant; position 6 is the character that changes:

Position 6 is the clearest signal: D for a standard-roof Coupe, F for the Spider, R on the two 765LT samples we could verify. One dealer listing showed a 2022 Coupe VIN with B at position 8 instead of A; NHTSA’s decoder flagged it as “VIN corrected, error in one position,” a transcription slip rather than a real second pattern, and exactly what the check digit at position 9 exists to catch.
Trim-level detail (Performance package, Luxury package, MSO Apex Collection options, the short-lived Launch Edition) doesn’t show up in this block. A 2018 Launch Edition Coupe we decoded (SBM14DCA9JW000556) carries the identical 14DCA sequence as an ordinary 2018 Coupe. Trim and equipment on a 720S live on the build sheet, not in the VIN.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit exists solely to catch typos and re-typed (potentially cloned) VINs. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using the SAE-standard weighting and modulo-11 formula defined in ISO 3779 and FMVSS 565. Change any single character elsewhere in the VIN and the math no longer checks out, which is the same mechanism that caught the mistyped Coupe VIN above.
Position 10: Model year

Note that J is a valid, used character here; it’s easy to assume I, J, O, and Q are all skipped because they resemble digits, but ISO 3779 only excludes I, O, and Q. J was actually used, for 2018 Coupes. We looked specifically for a G (2016) or H (2017) coded VIN, given the car’s Geneva unveiling and May 2017 first deliveries, and didn’t find one; every real 720S VIN we could locate starts at J. This same block of letters also stood for 1987 through 1993 in the prior 30-year cycle, but a real 720S VIN will only ever show H through P here.

The McLaren Production Centre in Woking is McLaren’s sole factory. There is no second plant, so every 720S VIN carries the same plant character. One quirk: NHTSA’s decode returns the plant country as “ENGLAND” on some VIN records and “UNITED KINGDOM (UK)” on others, depending on when the record was submitted. Both describe the same factory; it’s a labeling inconsistency in NHTSA’s database, not a real difference.
Positions 12 to 17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number for that specific car, making every 720S VIN globally unique when combined with the previous 11. Serial numbers climb roughly in step with model year across our sample (low 000,xxx for 2018 Coupes, into the 007,xxx range for 2023 Spiders), consistent with McLaren running one shared sequence across Coupe and Spider production. The two 765LT VINs we verified are the outlier: both carry serial numbers in the 765,xxx range (765689 and 765618), matching the car’s own model name and its 765-unit cap. That’s not an inferred pattern; it’s what both real 765LT VINs show.
