Note that the chassis codes above (CU, CW, GF/GG, GN) are Mitsubishi’s own internal platform designations, documented across enthusiast references and parts catalogs. Unlike some Kia and Hyundai VINs, they are not printed as a literal three-character block inside the North American 17-digit VIN; the VIN identifies generation through the World Manufacturer Identifier plus the Vehicle Descriptor Section codes covered below, not through the JDM chassis code itself.
The fourth generation is the genuinely significant one. After Mitsubishi formally joined the Renault-Nissan Alliance in 2016, the 2022-model-year Outlander became the first built on a shared Alliance platform, the same CMF-C architecture underneath the Nissan Rogue, with a nearly identical wheelbase and shared structural hardpoints, suspension, and brakes. Given that the Rogue is assembled at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tennessee plant, it’s a reasonable guess the Alliance-era Outlander moved production there too. It did not. Every 4th-generation US-market Outlander VIN we decoded, spanning 2022 through 2025 model years and including the PHEV, still returns Okazaki, Japan as the plant of manufacture. Platform sharing did not extend to North American assembly for this generation.
Mitsubishi Outlander WMI codes
The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier. Every genuine Outlander VIN we decoded across all four generations, first-generation 2004 models through current PHEV models, carried the same WMI:

How to read a Mitsubishi Outlander VIN, position by position
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
JA4 identifies a Mitsubishi-built light truck/MPV assembled in Japan. This has held true for every Outlander model year we checked, from the first 2004 models to the newest PHEV. The country code tells you where the vehicle was assembled, not where it was designed or sold.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where honesty matters more than tidiness. Mitsubishi does not use one consistent letter-for-engine or letter-for-drivetrain scheme across all four generations; the codes shift generation to generation. Here’s what real decoded VINs actually show, broken out by generation.
First generation (2003-2006) offered a single 2.4L MIVEC inline-4, so the VDS doesn’t need to flag an engine choice; real 2004 VINs decode cleanly to that one engine regardless of the VDS characters.
Second generation (2007-2013) launched with a 3.0L V6 only and added a 2.4L four-cylinder (ES/SE trims) partway through the run. Position 8 reliably flags which one, confirmed across real VINs from both the Mizushima and Okazaki plants:

Third generation (2014-2021, marketed in North America simply as “Outlander,” internal code GF/GG) is where the plug-in hybrid arrives for the US market (2018 model year). Position 8 again flags the powertrain:

That position-5 drivetrain split is a genuinely clean, repeatable pattern; we confirmed it on both FWD and AWD 4th-generation VINs across three separate model years (2022, 2023, and 2024).
Position 9: Check digit
A single character, calculated from the other 16 using fixed weighting and modulo-11 math, that catches typos. Change one character anywhere else in the VIN and the check digit no longer matches, which is why NHTSA’s system, state DMVs, and any compliant decoder will reject a mistyped VIN outright.
Position 10: Model year
Every VIN, regardless of make, uses the same repeating cycle for this character. We verified this directly against real Outlander VINs spanning 2004 through 2025 (the model year each VIN decoded to at NHTSA matched this table exactly in every case), so here is the complete, gap-free table for the Outlander’s full 2003-present production run:

Both plants only ever appear in Japan; we found no evidence of a North American-built Outlander at any point across all four generations, including the current Alliance-platform generation that shares its underpinnings with the Smyrna-built Nissan Rogue.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the sequential production number for that specific Outlander. Combined with everything before it, this makes each Outlander VIN globally unique, even two identical-spec Outlanders built the same week at the same plant.
Outlander trim levels by generation
VINs don’t spell out the trim name directly; a decoder reconstructs it from the VDS plus the equipment/build sheet, which is exactly what the tool above returns. Common North American Outlander trims by generation:

- Rearview camera display failure (2022-2024 Outlander, 2023-2025 Outlander PHEV): A software error in the infotainment system’s camera processing could cause the backup camera image to freeze or fail to appear entirely, a violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111. Mitsubishi first recalled roughly this population in 2023 (campaign 23V345), then issued an expanded 2025 recall (25V369) covering about 199,000 vehicles after the original software fix proved insufficient. Owners who already had the 2023 fix applied need the newer remedy too.
- Fuel pump failure (2022 Outlander): Mitsubishi Motors North America recalled certain 2022 Outlanders because the fuel pump’s internal commutator and wiring could be improperly fused, risking pump failure and an engine stall while driving. Dealers replaced the fuel pump free of charge.
