The kei-spec JB64 is Japan-only, with a 660cc turbocharged R06A three-cylinder engine for Japan’s kei-car tax class. The export-spec JB74 (badged Jimny Sierra in Japan, just “Jimny” almost everywhere else) is wider and runs a 1.5-liter K15B naturally aspirated four-cylinder. In 2023 Suzuki added a longer-wheelbase 5-Door variant, internal designation JB74W, built not in Japan but by Maruti Suzuki in India for export to over 100 countries.

Suzuki Jimny WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of a VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), are assigned under ISO 3780. We pulled real VINs from an enthusiast researcher’s compilation of Australian-delivered JB74 press cars and recall notices, cross-referenced against actual number plates and build dates, and decoded each one against NHTSA’s own vPIC API. Here’s what turned up:

One genuine oddity: when we ran the JSA-prefixed VIN through NHTSA’s decoder, it came back tagged as vehicle type “MOTORCYCLE.” NHTSA’s WMI registry has JSA on file only because Suzuki also uses it for motorcycles; nobody at NHTSA ever mapped it to the Jimny, since the Jimny was never submitted for US sale. A WMI existing in NHTSA’s database doesn’t mean NHTSA actually knows what the vehicle is. MA3 doesn’t appear in NHTSA’s WMI table at all (zero results on direct query), which tracks, since Maruti Suzuki has never sold cars in the US either.
How to read a Suzuki Jimny VIN: position by position
Every 4th-generation Jimny VIN follows the standard 17-character ISO 3779 layout. Here’s what we could verify for each block, and where the data runs out.
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
Covered above: JSA for Japan-built Jimnys sold in Australia, the UK, and Europe; MA3 for the India-built 5-Door; JS3 for Jimnys built for South American export, per enthusiast VIN research, though we couldn’t pin a dealer-verified example to that last claim with full confidence.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is the one place a Jimny VIN is unusually transparent: the chassis code is spelled out directly in the string. On the JSA-prefixed cars we checked, positions 4-8 read “GJB74,” where JB74 is the same chassis code Suzuki uses in its own marketing and parts catalogs; the leading G appears to flag the standard 4-seat body (a separate H prefix shows up on the commercial LCV variant sold in Europe and the UK from August 2020 onward, per the same VIN research). On the India-built 5-Door press cars, positions 4-8 instead read “JJC74,” the code for the longer-wheelbase body. Beyond that body-code split, we don’t have a manufacturer-confirmed table mapping individual VDS characters to engine or trim combinations, and we’re not inventing one.
Position 9: Check digit
Here’s the most useful, and most counter-intuitive, finding on this page. In the US and Canada, federal regulation (49 CFR 565, built on SAE J853) requires position 9 to be a mathematically computed check digit, using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 arithmetic, so a single mistyped character breaks the math and gets caught. ISO 3779 itself does not make that check digit mandatory worldwide; outside North America, manufacturers are free to leave position 9 as an ordinary content character.
Suzuki appears to do exactly that on the Jimny. We ran real, sourced JSA- and MA3-prefixed VINs through both our own modulo-11 calculation and NHTSA’s own decoder, and both returned the same result: the check digit doesn’t compute correctly. NHTSA’s decoder says so explicitly, returning the error “Check Digit (9th position) does not calculate properly” for a genuine Australian-market Jimny VIN. That isn’t a sign the VIN is fake; it means the check-digit requirement simply doesn’t apply outside North America, worth knowing before you assume every VIN worldwide should pass a US-style checksum. The JS3-prefixed sample VINs we located did produce a matching checksum, which may reflect a different convention for that export stream, though we don’t have enough independently-sourced examples to call it a confirmed pattern rather than coincidence.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character is meant to map to a model year on a repeating 30-year cycle under ISO 3779 and the NHTSA/SAE reference table. Here is the complete, gap-free cycle covering the Jimny’s current production run and beyond:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used anywhere in a VIN, on any vehicle, because they’re too easily confused with 1 and 0. That part of the standard is genuinely universal.
Where it gets honest again: the real Jimny VINs we decoded don’t cleanly confirm this table in practice. NHTSA’s own decoder flagged the 10th character on our sourced Australian-market sample as “Incorrect Model Year, Position 10 does not match valid model year codes,” because that character was a plain “0,” not a recognized model-year code at all. Combined with inconsistent third-party attempts to map Jimny build years to position-10 characters, our honest read is that Suzuki’s non-US Jimny VIN schemes don’t reliably use position 10 as a clean, standalone model-year flag the way the table above assumes. Treat the table as the correct universal ISO reference, and cross-check any specific Jimny year against the build date on the compliance plate or registration paperwork where possible.
Position 11: Assembly plant
This character is meant to flag the specific factory. In the VINs we sourced, it consistently read as a fixed digit rather than something that varied between the two known plants, so we don’t have a confirmed per-plant table to hand you. What we can say with confidence, from the WMI and VDS blocks plus Suzuki’s own manufacturing announcements: a JSA/JS3-prefixed Jimny with a “JB74” or “GJB74” descriptor was built at Kosai, Japan; an MA3-prefixed Jimny with a “JJC74” descriptor was built at Gurugram, India.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number. This is where the real Jimny VINs we found are most useful and internally consistent: the enthusiast VIN research we drew on cross-referenced these serial ranges against actual Australian government recall notices and vehicle-standards registrations, and the sequence tracks cleanly with known build dates, for example JSAGJB74V00107670 corresponding to a documented November 2018 build. That’s about as close to ground-truth verification as you’ll get for a car never required to report into any US database.

What does a Jimny VIN starting with MA3 mean?
MA3 shows up on the newer 5-Door Jimny, which is built not in Japan but by Maruti Suzuki at its Gurugram plant in India, then exported worldwide from 2023 onward. NHTSA has no record of the MA3 WMI at all, since Maruti Suzuki has never sold vehicles in the US.
Why doesn’t the check digit on my Jimny VIN calculate correctly?
