About McLaren

McLaren’s road-car story is younger than most rivals’. Ron Dennis founded McLaren Cars in 1989 to build the McLaren F1, the carbon-tub, BMW-engined supercar that arrived in 1992 and became the fastest naturally aspirated production car of its era. Only about 106 F1s were built before production ended in 1998, and for over a decade after that McLaren’s road-car ambitions ran through a joint project with Mercedes-Benz, the SLR McLaren.

McLaren Automotive as it exists today was established in 2010 as a standalone company dedicated entirely to designing, engineering, and building road cars, separate from the McLaren Racing Formula 1 team even though both trace back to the same McLaren name and the same Woking site. The McLaren Production Centre (MPC) opened in 2011 alongside the McLaren Technology Centre and has built every McLaren road car since: the MP4-12C (2011), 650S (2014), 570S and 675LT, 720S (2017), 600LT, GT (2019), the hybrid Artura (deliveries began in 2022), and the 750S (2023). Every McLaren sold new anywhere in the world, in every one of those model lines, is hand-assembled at the same Woking factory, which is unusual for a manufacturer at this production volume and makes the VIN’s plant information far less varied than what you’d see from a multi-continent carmaker.

McLaren WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO, and NHTSA’s public vPIC registry lists exactly one WMI on file for McLaren Automotive Limited:

Because McLaren builds every road car at the single Woking facility, you won’t see the spread of regional WMIs that a global manufacturer like BMW or Toyota carries. If your McLaren’s VIN doesn’t start with SBM, decode the full 17 characters with the tool above before assuming anything is wrong; a small number of pre-production, engineering, or track-only cars can carry different identifiers, and a used import may have been re-registered. Note also that NHTSA’s registry separately lists a WMI (43M) for “Monarch-McLaren,” an unrelated trailer manufacturer that has no connection to McLaren Automotive or its road cars; if you see that code, it isn’t a McLaren.

How to read a McLaren VIN: position by position

Every McLaren Automotive VIN, from the first MP4-12C onward, uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. Because SBM is the sole road-car WMI on file, this block simply confirms the vehicle is a genuine McLaren Automotive product built in the UK, rather than telling you which of several plants or countries built it.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

These five characters encode the model line (MP4-12C, 650S, 720S, Artura, 750S, GT, and their variants such as Spider, LT, or GTS), body style, and the drivetrain and engine configuration. McLaren’s engines have been twin-turbo V8s across nearly the whole range, with the Artura adding a V6 hybrid powertrain, and the VDS is what distinguishes those combinations on paper.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a McLaren VIN is mistyped, the check digit won’t match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurer will flag the VIN as invalid.

Position 11: Assembly plant

Position 11 identifies the specific factory. Since every McLaren road car is built at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, this character is far less informative on a McLaren than on a manufacturer running multiple plants; real-world McLaren VINs (for example, a 2020 720S carrying VIN SBM14FCAXLW004940) show a fixed letter here tied to the Woking facility rather than a code you need to cross-reference against a list of countries.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific McLaren as it left the assembly line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every McLaren VIN globally unique.
