About the Porsche 911
The 911 has been in continuous production since 1963, making it the longest-running nameplate in Porsche’s lineup and one of the longest-running in the industry. Early 911s (1963 to about 1973, internal code 901/911) and the G-series cars that followed (1974 to 1989, the SC and Carrera 3.2, sharing their body with the 930 Turbo) predate the 17-character VIN standard for large parts of their run. The year ranges overlap slightly at each transition because Porsche typically starts building a new generation partway through a calendar year while finishing out the old one. Across every VIN we decoded for this page, from a 1983 911 SC through a 2021 992 Carrera S, position 11 of the VIN and NHTSA’s own plant field agreed on the same answer every time: Zuffenhausen. As far as the 911 is concerned, it has been a one-plant car for its entire modern life. Porsche’s SUVs and the Taycan are built elsewhere, but the 911 itself has not moved.
Porsche 911 WMI codes (positions 1 to 3)
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. Every US-market Porsche 911 VIN we decoded, spanning nearly four decades, carried the same WMI:

We deliberately did not add a second WMI to this table. Porsche uses other WMIs (WP1, for example, is associated with Cayenne and Macan SUVs), but we only include a code here once we’ve confirmed it on an actual decoded 911 VIN, and every 911 in our sample, regardless of generation, comes back WP0. If your VIN starts with anything else, run it through the decoder at the top of the page before trusting the title.
How to read a Porsche 911 VIN: position by position
Every 911 built since the early 1980s uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. Here’s what each block of the VIN encodes, with real examples pulled from public dealer, auction, and classifieds listings and confirmed against NHTSA’s vPIC decoder.
Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier
Covered above: WP0 on every verified 911 VIN. The W marks Germany as the country of manufacture, P marks the manufacturer group, and 0 narrows it to Porsche AG specifically.
Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This is where things get harder to pin down, and we’d rather tell you that honestly than invent a clean table. Porsche has never published a public, universal decode key for these five characters the way some manufacturers do for platform codes. What we can tell you comes from directly comparing verified VINs:

299; on 991 and 992 cars the pattern changes to2A9, suggesting Porsche altered the encoding scheme when it moved past 30 years of the old VDS convention. We could not find a published source that maps these characters to specific engine or option codes, so we’re not going to guess at one here. NHTSA’s own decoder returns displacement, cylinder count, and horsepower for most of these VINs (pulled from the manufacturer’s own submission), and that’s the most reliable way to confirm engine data position-by-position guessing can’t give you.
If a decoder (ours included) can’t tell you the exact engine variant from the VDS alone on an older 911, that’s not a bug. It reflects a real gap in what Porsche has made public.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is calculated from the other 16 characters using the standard SAE/ISO modulo-11 weighting formula, and it’s the character that catches transcription errors. Every one of our verified US-market examples decoded clean against this formula. Worth flagging: some European-market and grey-market Porsche VINs use Z as a filler character in the VDS block and at the check-digit position itself (we found this pattern on a European-delivery 1985 Carrera 3.2 and a 1991 964 Turbo listing). Z is not a legal check-digit character under the US standard (only 0 to 9 and X are), so NHTSA’s decoder flags those VINs as invalid. That doesn’t necessarily mean the VIN is fake; it usually means the car wasn’t originally built to US federal spec, and the check digit was never calculated against the American formula in the first place. Treat a failed check digit on an import as a flag to dig into the paperwork, not automatic proof of a cloned VIN.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on a repeating 30-year cycle. Because the 911 has been in continuous 17-digit-VIN production since 1981, it has already gone all the way around that cycle once, so you need to know which pass you’re on. The chassis generation (964, 993, 996, and so on) tells you immediately; no 911 with a 991 or 992 body existed before 2010, so a K on one of those cars can only mean 2019, never 1989.

The letters I, O, and Q are never used, since they’re too easily confused with 1 and 0. Every model year in our verified sample matched this table exactly: a 1983 SC read D, a 1986 Carrera 3.2 read G, a 1991 964 read M, a 1995 993 read S, a 1999 996 read X, a 2002 996 read 2, a 2006 997 read 6, a 2007 997 read 7, a 2019 991 read K, and a 2021 992 read M. No skipped years, no exceptions.
Position 11: Assembly plant

Every single VIN we verified across all seven generations, 1983 through 2021, carried S at position 11, and NHTSA’s plant-city field confirmed Zuffenhausen or Stuttgart in every case. We could not find a documented second assembly-plant code for the standard 911 in the modern VIN era; unlike Porsche’s SUV lineup, which has been built at multiple sites, the 911 has stayed a one-factory car.
Positions 12 to 17: Serial number
The final six digits are the production sequence number for that specific car. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every 911 VIN globally unique, even among cars built the same week on the same line in the same trim.
Where to find the VIN on a Porsche 911
- Lower-left corner of the windshield, visible from outside the car (federally required on US-spec cars since the early 1980s)
- Driver’s side door jamb sticker, which also lists paint code, interior code, and production date
- Stamped into the front luggage compartment (the “frunk”), usually on the firewall or lock-carrier panel near where the hood latches, visible with the hood open
- Vehicle title, registration, insurance card, and the Porsche Connect app on cars equipped with it
The windshield and door jamb are the fastest to check on a used-car lot. The frunk stamp is the one to check if you suspect a car has been re-tagged; it’s spot-welded into the body and far harder to alter cleanly than an adhesive sticker.

How do I tell which 911 generation I have from the VIN?

As a rough guide: 1981 to 1989 is the G-series (SC and Carrera 3.2), 1989 to 1994 is the 964, 1994 to 1998 is the 993, 1997 to 2004 is the 996, 2004 to 2012 is the 997, 2011 to 2019 is the 991, and 2019 onward is the 992.
Why did my imported 911’s VIN fail the check-digit validation?
Some European-market and grey-market Porsches use Z as a filler character in the VIN, including at the check-digit position, because they were never built to the US federal check-digit formula in the first place. NHTSA’s decoder will flag these as invalid characters even though the car and its paperwork may be entirely legitimate. It’s a sign to check the import history, not automatic proof of a problem.
