About Porsche
Ferdinand Porsche founded “Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH” in Stuttgart on April 25, 1931, together with his son-in-law Anton Piëch and Adolf Rosenberger, as an engineering and vehicle-design consultancy rather than a car manufacturer. The first car to carry the Porsche name, the 356, was built in Gmünd, Austria in 1948 and designed by Ferdinand’s son, Ferry Porsche. The 911 arrived in 1963 (badged 901 at its debut) and has stayed in continuous production ever since, anchoring the brand around the rear-engine flat-six formula. Volkswagen Group has held a majority ownership stake in Porsche AG since 2012, while the Porsche and Piëch families retain control through Porsche SE.
Porsche’s production footprint is smaller and more concentrated than most premium automakers. Zuffenhausen, the original Stuttgart plant and Porsche’s home site since 1931, still builds every 911 and the electric successors to the 718 Boxster and Cayman, alongside the Taycan. Leipzig, opened in 2002, builds the Panamera and does final assembly on the Macan. The Cayenne, built in Leipzig from 2002 to 2017, now comes off the line at Volkswagen Group’s multi-brand plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, where Porsche also began series production of the Cayenne Electric in 2026.
Porsche WMI codes (positions 1–3)
The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO, and the two codes below are registered to Porsche in the NHTSA vPIC database, the same public system used to validate VINs sold in the US:

Both WMIs resolve to the same manufacturer of record, “DR. ING. H.C.F. PORSCHE AG,” in NHTSA’s decoder. The split exists to separate Porsche’s rear/mid-engine sports cars and four-door passenger cars (WP0) from its SUV lineup (WP1). How to read a Porsche VIN: position by position
Every Porsche VIN built since 1981 uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a Porsche:
Positions 1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. Position 3 (the “0” or “1”) is Porsche’s own split between passenger cars and MPVs. It is not a generic ISO rule, so don’t assume the same digit means the same thing on another brand’s VIN.
Positions 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Porsche’s VDS layout differs noticeably between US/Canada-spec VINs and Europe/rest-of-world VINs, which trips up a lot of owners comparing notes online. On North American cars, position 4 generally encodes body style (coupe, Targa, cabriolet, and so on) and position 5 the engine or powertrain variant, with positions 6-8 filling in restraint system and series detail. On European and rest-of-world VINs, Porsche instead leans on positions 7 and 8 (combined with position 12 later in the VIN) to build a three-part model code, with positions 4-6 often carrying filler characters. Because the exact position-to-feature mapping has also shifted across model generations, the reliable way to pull an exact model, engine, and trim from a Porsche VDS is to run the full VIN through the decoder above rather than reading positions 4-8 in isolation.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Porsche VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle. Skim the chart below to translate yours:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Porsche, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. Documented Porsche plant codes include S for Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart (911, 718, Taycan), L for Leipzig (Panamera, Macan final assembly), and U for Uusikaupunki, Finland (early Boxster and Cayman generations built under contract by Valmet Automotive). Positions 12–17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific Porsche as it rolled off the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Porsche VIN globally unique.
Where to find the VIN on a Porsche
You can find your Porsche VIN in several places. The lower-left windshield and the door jamb are the easiest to read; the others are useful when one of those labels has been damaged or replaced.
