A note on those chassis codes: Porsche and the enthusiast community use 955 (pre-facelift, 2003-2007) and 957 (facelift, 2008-2010) for the first generation. NHTSA’s decoded data does not return “955” or “957” in its Series field, only the trim name, but it does explicitly return “Type 92A” and “Type 9YA” / “Type 9YB” for the newer generations, a useful cross-check when confirming an older VIN’s generation.

The most interesting wrinkle, and the one most decoder pages get wrong, is where the Cayenne is actually built. Real decoded VINs, 2004-2025, break down like this:

Leipzig was the Cayenne’s home plant for its first two generations, and Porsche’s newsroom confirms painted bodies were shipped in from Volkswagen’s Bratislava plant for final assembly in Leipzig from day one in 2002. Only with the third generation did Porsche move final assembly of the whole car to Bratislava. We also decoded a handful of 2016-2017 VINs (a base Cayenne and two Diesel models) that returned Osnabrück, Germany, not Leipzig. Osnabrück is the former Karmann coachbuilding factory, absorbed by Volkswagen after Karmann’s 2009 bankruptcy, occasionally used for overflow Porsche volume (the 718 Boxster/Cayman runs there too). Most sources only mention Leipzig and Bratislava; these VINs point to a third plant most owners have never heard of.

For US-market cars, the switch to Bratislava lands at model year 2019: a 2018 US-spec Cayenne Turbo we decoded still came back Leipzig-built, Type 92A, while a 2019 Cayenne of the same trim came back Bratislava, Type 9YA. European-market cars got the 9YA generation and Bratislava production a year earlier.

The WMI identifies the manufacturer of record, not the physical assembly plant. A 2025 Cayenne built in Bratislava, Slovakia, still starts with WP1, the same code as a 2004 Cayenne built in Leipzig, Germany. Plant identity lives at position 11, not in the WMI. We did not find WP0 (used on the Porsche 911) on any Cayenne VIN, and we’re not listing it here since we only include a code once we’ve confirmed it on an actual decoded VIN.

How to read a Porsche Cayenne VIN: position by position

Every Cayenne built since 2003 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. Here’s what each block encodes, based on comparing dozens of verified VINs from real dealer, auction, and classifieds listings against NHTSA’s vPIC decoder.

Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier

Covered above: WP1 on every verified Cayenne VIN. W marks Germany as the country associated with the manufacturer code, P marks the Porsche/VW manufacturer group, and 1 narrows it to Porsche AG’s SUV line.

Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

Porsche has not published a public decode key for these five characters, so what follows comes from directly comparing verified VINs, generation by generation. The pattern holds consistently within each generation:
955/957 (2003-2010): Position 5 tracks trim: A on base Cayenne, B on Cayenne S, C on Cayenne Turbo, across every example checked. Positions 6 to 8 held steady at 29P regardless of trim or model year.
92A (2011-2018): Position 5 again tracks trim or powertrain: A base, B S, C Turbo, E S Hybrid, F Diesel. Positions 6 to 8 held at 2A2 across every 92A example.
9YA/9YB (2019-present): Position 4 splits by body style: A for the standard SUV, B for the Coupe. Position 5 tracks trim: A base, F Turbo, G GTS, H Turbo S E-Hybrid, L S. Positions 6 to 8 read 2AY on every third-generation VIN checked.
Position 4 stayed A through the first two generations, since there was no Coupe body yet, and only started splitting between A and B once the Coupe launched alongside the 9YA SUV. NHTSA’s decoder also returns engine displacement, cylinder count, horsepower, and fuel type for most of these VINs, pulled from the manufacturer’s federal filings, the most reliable way to confirm exact engine data rather than reverse-engineering it from the VDS alone.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is calculated from the other 16 characters using the standard SAE/ISO modulo-11 weighting formula, catching transcription errors. Every VIN we verified for this page, from a 2004 Turbo to a 2025 Cayenne S, decoded clean against this formula in NHTSA’s system.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to model year on a repeating 30-year cycle. The Cayenne has only existed since 2003, so it has not yet gone all the way around the cycle; every model year to date maps cleanly to the table below with no ambiguity.
