Outside North America, Genesis also sells the GV70 with a 2.2L CRDi diesel, though that engine has never been offered in the US market and will not turn up in a US-titled VIN.

A common assumption is that the Electrified GV70 is US-exclusive to the Alabama plant and the gas GV70 is Korea-exclusive. The decoded VINs do not support that split. Several real 2024 gasoline GV70 VINs (2.5T and 3.5T, both) carry the 5NM Alabama WMI, meaning HMMA builds gasoline GV70s for the US market alongside the Electrified GV70, not just the EV. Genesis has not published which specific trims are Alabama-only versus Korea-only, and it is entirely possible for two GV70s of the same model year and engine to have come from either plant depending on production allocation. One correction worth flagging: some general web summaries describe the Electrified GV70 as built at Hyundai Motor Group’s newer Metaplant America campus in Bryan County, Georgia. Every real Electrified GV70 VIN we decoded, plus HMMA’s own press releases, point to Montgomery, Alabama instead. The Georgia Metaplant (which opened in 2024) currently builds the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 9, and Kia Sportage Hybrid; we found no VIN or manufacturer confirmation of GV70 production there as of this writing.
How to read a Genesis GV70 VIN: position by position
Every US-market GV70 built since 2022 uses the standard 17-character ISO 3779 format. The string breaks into three blocks.
Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. KMU decodes as Hyundai Motor Co. in NHTSA’s manufacturer registry (Genesis is one of the brands built under that WMI) and maps to the Ulsan plant. 5NM decodes as Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama LLC and maps to Montgomery. Both are registered under the Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV) class, which is correct for the GV70’s SUV body style.
Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This block encodes the model, engine family, and body/restraint configuration. Across every real GV70 VIN we decoded, position 4 was consistently M and position 7 was consistently T, while positions 5, 6, and 8 varied by engine and, apparently, by trim:

Position 6 is the clearest signal: D shows up on every gasoline VIN we decoded and E shows up on every Electrified VIN, which tracks with fuel type. Position 8 also tracks the broad engine family (B for 2.5T, C for 3.5T, 1 for Electrified) fairly consistently. What we could not pin down honestly is position 5: it read A on 2.5T cars, but C on a 2024 base 3.5T and E on a 2026 3.5T Sport Prestige, which suggests it may track trim or a running production change rather than engine alone. Genesis has not published an official VDS legend, and NHTSA’s own decoder frequently returns a blank or a list of several possible trims for a given VDS string rather than one definitive answer, so treat the position 5 to 8 breakdown above as an observed pattern from real decoded VINs, not a confirmed factory spec.
Position 9: Check digit
The 9th character is a computed check digit, generated from the other 16 characters using the SAE J853 / ISO 3779 weighting formula and modulo-11 arithmetic. If you retype a VIN and change even one character elsewhere in the string, the math stops matching, and any standards-compliant decoder (including this one, NHTSA’s vPIC, and every state DMV system) will flag the VIN as invalid. Every VIN referenced on this page decoded clean with a correct check digit confirmed by NHTSA.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on the ISO 3779 30-year cycle. The letters I, O, and Q are never used because they are too easily confused with 1 and 0. Since GV70 production began for model year 2022, here is the complete, gap-free table for the years that matter for this model:
