About Genesis

Genesis is the standalone luxury division of Hyundai Motor Group. The name started as a single model, the 2008 Hyundai Genesis sedan, before Hyundai split it off as an independent brand on November 4, 2015, Korea’s first dedicated luxury nameplate. The G80 and G90 sedans reached American showrooms in 2016, and Genesis has since expanded into a full lineup of sedans (G70, G80, G90) and SUVs (GV60, GV70, GV80), including electric variants built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform.

Because Genesis is a modern brand, every VIN it has ever issued already follows the full 17-character international standard; there is no pre-standardization “classic” Genesis VIN format to account for. Most Genesis models are built in South Korea at Hyundai’s Ulsan complex, the largest single automobile assembly site in the world. In 2023, Genesis began building a US model for the first time: the Electrified GV70 rolled off the line at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) in Montgomery, marking the brand’s first vehicle assembled outside South Korea.

Genesis WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO, and the NHTSA vPIC database is the definitive public record of registered WMIs. Here are the WMIs you’ll encounter on Genesis vehicles:

WMI Country of build Vehicle type
KMT South Korea Genesis passenger car (Hyundai Motor Co., Ulsan)
KMH South Korea Hyundai / Genesis passenger car
KMU South Korea Hyundai / Genesis multipurpose vehicle (GV-series SUVs)
5NM USA Genesis / Hyundai multipurpose vehicle, HMMA, Montgomery, AL (Electrified GV70)

If your Genesis VIN begins with any of the codes above, it’s a genuine Genesis. A Genesis VIN starting with an unlisted WMI may indicate a data-entry error, a different Hyundai Motor Group brand, or a counterfeit plate. Decode the full VIN with the tool above to confirm.

How to read a Genesis VIN: position by position

Every Genesis VIN uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Block Positions What it encodes
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) 1 – 3 Country and manufacturer
Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) 4 – 8 Model, body, engine, restraints
Check digit 9 Math-validated control character
Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) 10 – 17 Model year, plant, serial

Here is what each position means specifically on a Genesis:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. The country code at position 1 tells you where the vehicle was assembled, not where Genesis or Hyundai is headquartered. A Genesis VIN starting with “K” was built in South Korea; a VIN starting with “5” was built in the United States.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

This block identifies the model line (G70, G80, G90, GV60, GV70, GV80), body style, drivetrain (rear-wheel or all-wheel drive), and restraint system. Electrified and internal-combustion variants of the same body, such as the GV70 and Electrified GV70, carry different codes within this block even though they share a platform.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Genesis VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.

Position 10: Model year

The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle. Because Genesis only began issuing VINs in 2015, here is the relevant range:

Char Year Char Year
T 2026 L 2020
S 2025 K 2019
R 2024 J 2018
P 2023 H 2017
N 2022 G 2016
M 2021 F 2015

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, including Genesis, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0.

Position 11: Assembly plant

The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. On Genesis and Hyundai VINs, this is commonly U for the Ulsan, South Korea complex and M for Montgomery, Alabama (HMMA), the two facilities currently building Genesis vehicles.

Positions 12-17: Serial number

The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific Genesis as it rolled off the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Genesis VIN globally unique.

Where to find the VIN on a Genesis

You can find your Genesis VIN in several places. The lower-left windshield and the door jamb are the easiest to read; the others are useful when one of those labels has been damaged or replaced.

  • Lower-left corner of the windshield, visible from outside
  • Driver’s side door jamb sticker (VIN, trim, paint, interior code)
  • Vehicle title, registration, and insurance card
  • Genesis Connected Services owner account and service records

Since every Genesis ever built already uses the full 17-character format, you won’t run into the shortened chassis-number formats that pre-1981 vehicles from older brands sometimes use. If you’re researching an older vehicle from a different make, our classic car VIN decoder guide covers those earlier formats.

Check Genesis recalls and safety information

Open and historic recalls on Genesis vehicles are tracked by national transport authorities. The fastest way to check a specific Genesis:

  1. Decode the VIN with the tool above to confirm the model and model year
  2. Cross-reference the 17-character VIN with the Genesis Safety Recalls and Service Campaigns lookup, which searches by VIN directly
  3. Review any open safety actions and contact your nearest Genesis retailer for free repair

Recalls are repaired free of charge by the manufacturer regardless of vehicle age or ownership history.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decode my Genesis VIN?

Type the 17-character VIN from your Genesis’s windshield, driver-side door jamb, or vehicle title into the decoder at the top of this page. Results return in seconds and include make, model, model year, body style, engine or powertrain, transmission, plant of origin, and open NHTSA recalls. No registration is required.

Where is the VIN on my Genesis?

The two easiest spots are the lower-left corner of the windshield (visible from outside the car) and the driver-side door jamb sticker. Both locations are required by federal labelling regulation on every road-going Genesis sold in North America.

Is the Genesis VIN decoder free?

Yes. VinDecoderPlus decodes every Genesis VIN free of charge with no sign-up or credit card. Full vehicle history reports, including ownership records, accident history, and odometer history, are available as an optional paid upgrade.

What does the VIN tell me about my Genesis?

A VIN decode confirms the original factory configuration of your Genesis: model, year, body style, engine or powertrain, transmission, trim level, factory options, country and plant of origin, and any recall actions issued against that VIN. It does not record color (which is on the build sheet), current mileage, accident history, or ownership chain. For those, you need a paid vehicle history report.

Can a Genesis VIN be faked?

The 17 characters themselves can be retyped, but the check digit at position 9 makes silent tampering nearly impossible: any single-character change breaks the math. Genesis VIN plates are tamper-resistant by federal standard. If you suspect a cloned VIN, our guide how to check if a car is stolen by VIN walks through the next steps.
