Most 1965-1966 cars we found use an “AR 613” series followed by a sequential number, matching a common production block for the 1600 GTA. But one reputable RM Sotheby’s catalog entry for a nominally identical 1965 model uses a visibly different prefix, AR752675, a discrepancy we cannot resolve from public sources and are not papering over with an invented rule. As with other pre-standardization Alfa Romeos, chassis numbering tracked production series and internal variant (1600 GTA, 1300 Junior GTA, 1750 GTAm, and the rare twin-supercharged GTA-SA experimental cars each had their own runs) rather than one continuous, decodable block. One correction to a common assumption: while the GTA was fundamentally a racing homologation special never sold through a US Alfa Romeo retail network, it was not universally absent from the US new. The Bonhams-catalogued chassis 613 886 was documented as originally supplied new via Newark, New Jersey concessionaires and later raced in American Trans-Am, a reminder that Alfa Romeo was an active US brand throughout the GTA’s run (it did not withdraw until 1995) and that a few GTAs reached America new, largely for racing.

Both GTAs were the last new Alfa Romeo production models to use the 3.2-liter version of the Giuseppe Busso-designed V6, an engine family that had powered Alfa flagships since the 1970s; later Alfas moved to smaller, turbocharged engines. Where to find the VIN or chassis number

On a classic 1965-1971 Giulia Sprint GTA, the chassis (telaio) number is hand-stamped into the frame, typically near the engine bay or firewall, and the engine carries its own separate serial number that a buyer should cross-check against the chassis stamp. Bertone coachbuilder plates identify the body, not the chassis, and should not be confused with the telaio number.

On a modern 156 GTA or 147 GTA, the VIN is stamped in the engine bay near the right-hand shock absorber tower, on a metal plate riveted inside the engine bay, and printed on the libretto di circolazione (Italian registration document) or equivalent. Neither era was built to US federal labeling rules, so do not expect a windshield-visible VIN plate. Recalls and safety information

Neither GTA appears in NHTSA’s US recall database, for two different reasons. The classic Giulia Sprint GTA predates any government-mandated recall system entirely. The modern 156 GTA and 147 GTA were simply never sold or federalized in the US, so NHTSA has no compliance record for them.
