The 1st-gen NX sold as the NX 200t (2015-2017, 2.0L turbo), renamed NX 300 for 2018-2021, alongside the NX 300h hybrid (2015-2021) and F Sport trims of both. The 2nd-gen NX, introduced for 2022, restructured the lineup around four powertrains: NX 250 (naturally aspirated four-cylinder), NX 350 (turbo four), NX 350h (hybrid), and NX 450h+, the plug-in hybrid that gave the nameplate a genuine EV-range option. One correction worth flagging: several general sources describe the 450h+ as a 2.4L turbo hybrid. Every 450h+ VIN we decoded through NHTSA’s vPIC database instead reports a 2.5L four-cylinder (engine code A25A-FXS) paired with front and rear electric motors, matching Lexus’s own published specs. The 2.4L turbo (T24A-FTS) belongs to the non-hybrid NX 350.
The bigger surprise in researching this page was assembly location. Most owner forums assume every NX comes from Kyushu, and that’s true for the 1st generation and for the 2nd-gen NX 250 and NX 450h+. But starting in March 2022, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) in Cambridge, Ontario began building the NX 350 and NX 350h for North America, the same plant that has assembled the Lexus RX since 2003. Decoded VINs for 2022-2025 NX 350 and NX 350h models consistently return “Cambridge Plant / Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada” as the plant of manufacture, with plant character “C” at VIN position 11. So a North American NX 350 most likely carries a Canadian VIN, while its NX 250 or NX 450h+ sibling in the next parking spot was built in Japan.
Lexus NX WMI codes (positions 1 to 3)
The first three characters of a VIN form the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned by SAE on behalf of ISO. These are the two WMIs confirmed on real, decoded Lexus NX VINs:

How to read a Lexus NX VIN: position by position
Every NX built since 2015 uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard. The string breaks into three blocks, and each character carries specific meaning.
Positions 1 to 3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the table above. The first character is the country of assembly, not the brand’s headquarters: J means Japan, 2 means Canada. The second character (T) identifies Toyota Motor Corporation as the manufacturer group, and the third narrows the vehicle class. A VIN starting JTJ was assembled in Japan; one starting 2T2 was assembled in Ontario, Canada, and both are equally genuine Lexus NX SUVs.
Positions 4 to 8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
This block encodes body, engine, and restraint system together, and it’s where the four NX powertrains separate. Toyota doesn’t publish a single isolated “engine code” character the way some manufacturers do, and decoding sample VINs showed the NHTSA database’s own trim-name field isn’t always reliable at the individual-character level (two NX 350 VINs with the same trim label decoded to two different engines, one 2.4L turbo, one 2.5L naturally aspirated). What is confirmed and consistent is the engine actually reported against each powertrain:

Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the one character in the VIN that catches typos. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. Mistype a single character anywhere in the VIN and the math no longer matches; any compliant decoder, every state DMV, and the NHTSA recall database will reject the entry.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to model year on the standard 30-year ISO cycle. For a Lexus NX, which has only ever been built from 2015 onward, here’s the complete, gap-free run:

Positions 12 to 17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence stamped on your specific NX as it left the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every NX VIN globally unique. Two cars with the same generation, year, plant, and engine still differ here.

An NX VIN doesn’t spell out the trim name directly; trim is reconstructed from the VDS block combined with the equipment group on the build sheet. The broad trim ladder by generation:

Where to find the VIN on a Lexus NX
Four locations on every NX, plus the paperwork:
