About Lexus

Lexus is the luxury division of Toyota Motor Corporation, built in near-total secrecy under the internal codename “Project F1” starting in 1983. Chief engineer Ichiro Suzuki led a team that eventually grew to more than 1,400 engineers and 2,300 technicians, with no fixed budget and one mandate: build a flagship sedan that could beat the best German luxury cars on quietness, aerodynamics, and refinement. The result, the LS 400, debuted at the Detroit auto show in January 1989 alongside a smaller, Camry-based ES 250, and both went on sale later that year to launch the Lexus brand in the US.

Lexus remains overwhelmingly Japanese-engineered and Japanese-built. Most sedans and SUVs come from Toyota’s Tahara plant in Aichi Prefecture (LS, IS, RC, GX, LX) or the Kyushu plant in Miyata (IS and ES, historically also the RX). Two notable exceptions break that pattern. Since 2015, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) in Georgetown has built the US-market ES sedan, making it the first Lexus model ever produced outside Japan on a mass scale. And since 2003, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) in Cambridge, Ontario has built the RX, Lexus’s best-selling model worldwide, meaning most RX SUVs sold in North America actually carry a Canadian-origin VIN rather than a Japanese one.

Lexus WMI codes (positions 1-3)

The first three characters of your VIN, the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), tell you who built the vehicle and where. The WMI is assigned by SAE International on behalf of ISO and confirmed against the NHTSA vPIC database. Here are the WMIs you’ll encounter on Lexus vehicles:

How to read a Lexus VIN: position by position

Every Lexus VIN, since the brand’s first cars in 1989, uses the ISO 3779 17-character standard. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

See the WMI table above. The country code at position 1 tells you where the vehicle was assembled, not where Lexus is headquartered. A Lexus assembled outside Japan (Kentucky, Ontario) carries the country code of the assembly plant, not a Japanese “J” prefix.

Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

Positions 4 through 8 identify the model line, body style, engine, and restraint system together. On a Lexus, this is where you’ll find the difference between, say, an ES 350 and an ES 300h, or a GX 460 and an LX 600; the model and engine designation is encoded here rather than spelled out in the VIN.

Position 9: Check digit

The check digit is the most important single character in any VIN. It is calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Lexus VIN is mistyped, the check digit will not match, and any compliant decoder, DMV, or insurance system will flag the VIN as invalid.

Positions 12-17: Serial number
