Every US-market Encore GX, both before and after the refresh, has come from the same GM Korea plant in Bupyeong, Incheon. A China-market version (sold there as the Buick Encore Plus) was built at SAIC-GM’s Dongyue plant in Yantai, Shandong, from 2019 until that variant was discontinued in the Chinese market in 2025, but that car does not carry a US-style KL4 VIN and isn’t part of this guide.
As of this writing, the Encore GX remains in production. GM Authority reported that 2026 model year production is scheduled to run through late October 2026 before switching over to the 2027 model year, at which point GM is dropping the 1.2L engine option entirely and making the 1.3L turbo the Encore GX’s only engine. How to read a Buick Encore GX VIN, position by position
Every Encore GX ever built uses the 17-character ISO 3779 standard.
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
Covered above. KL4 means Korean-built GM product. On a genuine Encore GX it will always read KL4, never a US, Chinese, or European country code.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Positions 4-5 carry the model code covered above, MM for a 2020-2023 Encore GX or AM for a 2024-and-newer one. Position 8 is the engine code, and it maps cleanly to the two engine families GM has offered on the North American Encore GX:

The 2-to-P change at position 8 for the 1.2L engine is a genuine oddity: it isn’t tied to the MM-to-AM model code switch (2024 VINs with the 1.2L still read 2), and vPIC itself is inconsistent about whether that same physical engine is labeled L1H or LIH depending on the model year queried. Treat position 8 as reliable for telling 1.2L from 1.3L, but don’t assume the exact GM part-level engine code from the VIN alone; decode the specific VIN if you need that level of detail.
Position 6 tends to track trim tier plus drivetrain (for example, B shows up on Preferred FWD units across multiple years, G on the top all-wheel-drive trim whether that trim was called Essence in 2021 or Avenir in 2026), but Buick does not publish this as a fixed table and the trim names attached to each tier have changed over the car’s life. Don’t treat position 6 as a stand-alone trim decoder; the tool above cross-references the full VDS against GM’s build data to return the actual trim.
Position 9: Check digit
A single character calculated from the other 16 using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. Change any one character in the VIN and the check digit stops matching. Every VIN cited in this guide was verified against NHTSA’s vPIC decoder, which flags a bad check digit as an error.
Position 10: Model year

Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number for that specific vehicle. Combined with the previous 11 characters, they make every Encore GX VIN globally unique, even between two identical trims built the same week at the same plant.
Encore GX trim levels by year
2020-2023: Preferred, Select, and Essence, with an optional Sport Touring appearance package layered on top of any of them.
2024-present: Buick renamed the lineup as part of the mid-cycle refresh.
