This page is the dedicated Atto 3 hub: WMI codes, a position-by-position guide to the VIN, where to find it on the car, and how to check for open recalls in your market.
A quick note on market coverage: the BYD Atto 3 is not sold in the United States. NHTSA’s vPIC registry, the database this site normally cites for US-market WMI data, returns almost nothing useful for BYD: one passenger-car WMI (LGX) with no evidence of authorized US retail sale, plus a handful of bus and truck codes tied to BYD Coach & Bus LLC, a real subsidiary that builds electric buses, not Atto 3 passenger cars. This page relies instead on China’s own vehicle-registration framework and the recall authorities of the Atto 3’s real export markets. The VIN itself is still the same worldwide ISO 3779 standard, so the decoder above reads an Atto 3 VIN the same way it reads a Ford or Toyota VIN.
About the BYD Atto 3
The Atto 3 launched in China in February 2022, where it’s sold as the BYD Yuan Plus. “Atto 3” is the export name BYD uses for most markets outside China, and the two are the same car under different badges. A smaller sibling, sold in South America as the Yuan Pro and in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia as the Atto 2, is a distinct, smaller model, not another name for the Atto 3, so don’t assume every “Yuan” or “Atto” badge refers to the same car.
The Atto 3 is a compact electric SUV built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, the company’s first ground-up EV-only architecture, using BYD’s own lithium iron phosphate (LFP) “Blade” battery in several capacities depending on market (roughly 50 kWh to 60.5 kWh, with a larger 74.8 kWh Evo variant in some regions). It earned a five-star Euro NCAP crash rating in 2022. A facelifted version, with updated styling and BYD’s “God’s Eye” driver-assist camera and radar suite, began rolling out in export markets from 2025.
BYD has sold the Atto 3 (or Yuan Plus) across a wide spread of right- and left-hand-drive markets: Australia and New Zealand, the UK and continental Europe, Israel, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, most of Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, and Latin American markets including Brazil, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. It has never been officially sold in the United States or Canada.
Assembly is spread across several sites. Chinese-market and much of the export volume comes from BYD plants in Changsha, Changzhou, and Hefei. The Rayong plant in Thailand builds right-hand-drive units for Southeast Asia, Australia, and other Asia-Pacific markets. In India, the Atto 3 was assembled from semi-knocked-down (SKD) kits near Chennai rather than imported fully built.
BYD Atto 3 WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of any VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), assigned under ISO 3780. The letter L at position 1 marks a vehicle built in China. NHTSA’s vPIC registry, which manufacturers can register WMIs into regardless of US retail sales, lists these BYD-linked codes:
| WMI | Registered vehicle type (per NHTSA vPIC) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LGX | Passenger car | The code associated with BYD China passenger-vehicle production, including the Atto 3/Yuan Plus |
| LC0 | Bus | BYD’s electric-bus WMI, not a passenger-car code |
| LPE | Truck | BYD commercial-vehicle WMI |
| 99L | Bus | Registered to BYD do Brasil, for Brazilian-assembled buses |
Independent VIN-guide aggregators that track Chinese exports list the same handful of codes, which is reassuring but not a substitute for an authoritative source; China has no public WMI registry equivalent to NHTSA’s. If your Atto 3’s VIN doesn’t begin with LGX, it may still be genuine: a unit built at Rayong or assembled from SKD kits in India could plausibly carry a local assembler’s WMI instead. Decode the full 17 characters with the tool above for the best read.
How to read a BYD Atto 3 VIN: position by position
Every current Atto 3 VIN follows the same ISO 3779 17-character structure used worldwide. The 17 characters split into three blocks:
| Block | Positions | What it encodes |
|---|---|---|
| World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) | 1-3 | Country and manufacturer |
| Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) | 4-8 | Model, body, battery, restraints |
| Check digit | 9 | Math-validated control character |
| Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) | 10-17 | Model year, plant, serial |
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. LGX marks a China-built BYD passenger car. A unit assembled overseas, at Rayong or Sriperumbudur, may carry a different WMI tied to the local assembler rather than BYD’s home-market code.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
These five characters encode the model line, body style, battery capacity (roughly 50 kWh, 60.5 kWh, or 74.8 kWh Blade LFP packs, depending on market and trim), and restraint system, the block that separates an Atto 3 from a Dolphin or Seal despite all three sharing the e-Platform 3.0 architecture. BYD doesn’t publish a public decode table for these characters, so the tool above relies on aggregated production data rather than one official source.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the single most important character in any VIN. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character is mistyped or altered, the check digit won’t match, and a compliant decoder will flag the VIN as invalid.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle, identical worldwide under ISO 3779. Skim the chart below to translate yours:
| Char | Year | Char | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| R | 2024 | F | 2015 |
| S | 2025 | E | 2014 |
| T | 2026 | D | 2013 |
| V | 2027 | C | 2012 |
| W | 2028 | B | 2011 |
| X | 2029 | A | 2010 |
| Y | 2030 | 9 | 2009 |
| 1 | 2031 | 8 | 2008 |
| 2 | 2032 | 7 | 2007 |
| 3 | 2033 | 6 | 2006 |
The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, the Atto 3 included, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0. Since the Atto 3 didn’t exist before 2022, only N onward is relevant to a real car.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the factory: a Chinese plant (Changsha, Changzhou, Hefei), Rayong in Thailand, or the Sriperumbudur SKD site in India. No independent source publishes BYD’s letter-to-plant mapping, so the tool above infers the plant from the WMI, model, and market together.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your specific vehicle as it rolled off the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Atto 3 VIN globally unique.
Where to find the VIN on a BYD Atto 3
You can find the VIN in several places. Exact terminology and label locations vary by country, but these are the most common:
- Lower corner of the windshield, visible from outside
- Driver’s side door jamb or door frame sticker
- Stamped on the firewall or under the front trunk liner (the Atto 3 has no engine, so the usual engine-bay stamp sits in the motor compartment or frunk instead)
- Registration document, import paperwork, or dealer’s invoice; in China, also the battery passport
Check BYD Atto 3 recalls and safety information
There is no single global authority tracking recalls across every market where the Atto 3 is sold. Each region applies its own rules:
- China (home market): the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) administers recalls. In September 2024, BYD recalled roughly 96,700 Atto 3 and Dolphin units built between late 2022 and 2023 over a steering-controller fire risk; BYD confirmed it applied to mainland China only, not export markets.
- Australia: recalls and product safety fall to the ACCC and state road-transport authorities, working with BYD’s local distributor; the Atto 3 has also faced separate compliance actions unrelated to China’s recall, such as a 2022 stop-delivery notice over a child-seat-anchor issue.
- European Union and UK: the Atto 3 falls under EU/UK type-approval rules, with recalls issued through national transport authorities and BYD’s local importer.
- India, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and other export markets: recalls typically run through the national transport ministry, coordinated with BYD’s local distributor or partner.
The fastest way to check a specific vehicle:
- Decode the VIN with the tool above to confirm the model year and likely market of assembly
- Search for open recalls through your country’s transport or consumer-safety authority, using the model name and VIN
- Contact your nearest authorized BYD dealer or importer directly with the VIN for confirmation and free recall repair
Genuine safety recalls are free of charge, regardless of which country you’re in.
Frequently asked questions
How do I decode my BYD Atto 3 VIN?
Type the 17-character VIN from your vehicle’s windshield, door jamb, or registration paperwork into the decoder at the top of this page. Results return in seconds and include model year, battery configuration, body style, and likely assembly market. No registration is required.
Is the BYD Atto 3 the same car as the Yuan Plus?
Yes. Yuan Plus is the name BYD uses in China; Atto 3 is the export name used across most of the rest of the world. They’re the same vehicle. Don’t confuse either with the Yuan Pro or Atto 2, which is a smaller, separate BYD model despite the similar naming.
Is the BYD Atto 3 sold in the USA?
No. The Atto 3 is not sold in the United States or Canada. BYD does have a real US presence through its bus-manufacturing subsidiary, BYD Coach & Bus LLC, but that business builds electric buses, not the Atto 3 or any other passenger car.
Where is the VIN on my Atto 3?
The most common locations are the lower windshield corner and the driver’s-side door jamb sticker, though exact placement depends on the vehicle-labelling rules of the country it was sold in.
Is the BYD Atto 3 VIN decoder free?
Yes. VinDecoderPlus decodes every BYD Atto 3 VIN free of charge with no sign-up or credit card required.
Is a BYD Atto 3 VIN the same format as a European or Australian car’s VIN?
Yes. The Atto 3 follows the same ISO 3779 17-character VIN standard used worldwide. The difference from a US-market brand is that there’s no single regulator behind registration and recalls: that role falls to China’s SAMR, Australia’s ACCC, an EU/UK type-approval authority, or another country’s own transport agency, depending on where the vehicle was sold.
