A quick note on market coverage: the BYD Seal is a Chinese-built electric sedan and is not sold in the United States. It doesn’t appear in NHTSA’s showroom data because BYD doesn’t sell passenger cars through franchised US dealers at all, not because the Seal specifically was excluded. NHTSA’s own WMI registry does list one BYD passenger-car code, LGX, filed under “BYD Auto Co., Ltd.” (confirmed via NHTSA’s vPIC GetWMIsForManufacturer lookup), but that’s a manufacturer registration, not proof of US retail sales. The Seal’s real markets are China, Europe, Australia, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and South Africa. Because it sells in dozens of countries, each with its own registration and recall system, this page can’t point to one national authority the way a US-market model page can. The VIN structure itself is still the same worldwide ISO 3779 standard used by every carmaker, so the decoder above reads a Seal VIN the same way it reads a Ford or Toyota VIN.
About the BYD Seal
The BYD Seal is a mid-size electric fastback sedan, announced in China in May 2022 with deliveries starting that August. It’s built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 with an 800-volt electrical architecture and BYD’s Blade LFP battery integrated directly into the body structure (Cell-to-Body, or CTB, construction), and it’s widely positioned as BYD’s answer to the Tesla Model 3. Exterior design was led by former Audi and Alfa Romeo designer Wolfgang Egger, who joined BYD in 2016.
BYD assembles the Seal in China at plants in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, and Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, then exports it widely: China (August 2022), Europe (from September 2023, including the UK and Germany), Australia (2023), Brazil (August 2023) and Mexico (November 2023) in Latin America, Hong Kong (October 2023), several Southeast Asian markets including Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and South Africa (October 2024). It has not been offered for sale in the United States.
The Seal name has since grown into a small family of related nameplates (Seal U, Seal 05, Seal 06, Seal 07), some China-only and some export-only, each with its own body style. BYD Seal WMI codes (positions 1-3)
The first three characters of any VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), assigned under ISO 3780. The letter L at position 1 marks a vehicle built in China. Independent VIN-decoding registries and NHTSA’s own manufacturer database agree on this code for the Seal:

BYD also holds other China-based WMIs (LC0, LPE, and others) for buses, trucks, and commercial vehicles, and a Brazil-registered code (99L) for bus assembly there; none apply to the Seal passenger car. If a VIN in front of you doesn’t start with LGX, it may still be a genuine BYD, just not a Seal, or it may come from an overseas plant (Thailand, Brazil, Hungary from 2026, Turkey planned) that carries the local assembler’s WMI instead of a Chinese one. How to read a BYD Seal VIN: position by position
Every Seal VIN follows the same ISO 3779 17-character structure used worldwide. The 17 characters split into three blocks:

Here is what each position means specifically on a Seal:
Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
See the WMI table above. A China-built Seal carries LGX at the start of its VIN regardless of which country it’s ultimately sold in; the code marks where the car was assembled, not where it ends up.
Positions 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
These five characters encode the specific Seal variant: single-motor rear-wheel-drive versus dual-motor all-wheel-drive Performance, battery capacity (BYD has offered roughly 61.4 kWh and 82.5 kWh Blade packs on the Seal), body detail, and restraint system. BYD hasn’t published an official position-by-position VDS key the way some legacy automakers have, so the exact character meanings are best left to the decoder above rather than read off by eye.
Position 9: Check digit
The check digit is the single most important character in any VIN. It’s calculated from the other 16 characters using a fixed weighting table and modulo-11 math. If even one character of a Seal VIN is mistyped or altered, the check digit won’t match, and a compliant decoder will flag the VIN as invalid.
Position 10: Model year
The 10th character maps to a model year on a 30-year cycle, identical worldwide under ISO 3779. Skim the chart below to translate yours:

The letters I, O, and Q are never used in any VIN, the Seal included, because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0. Since the Seal only exists from 2022 onward, expect only this cycle’s recent characters (P, R, S, T, and so on) on a genuine Seal VIN.
Position 11: Assembly plant
The single character at position 11 identifies the specific factory. The Seal is built at two confirmed Chinese sites, Xi’an and Changzhou; public VIN databases tie character A to Xi’an, but a confirmed character for Changzhou wasn’t available at the time of writing, so the decoder above is the more reliable way to pin down plant of origin than memorizing a single letter.
Positions 12-17: Serial number
The final six characters are the production sequence number stamped on your Seal as it rolled off the line. Combined with the previous 11 characters, this makes every Seal VIN globally unique.
Where to find the VIN on a BYD Seal
You can find the VIN in several places. Exact terminology and label placement vary a little by country, but these are the most common:
- Lower corner of the windshield, visible from outside
- Driver’s side door jamb or door frame sticker
- Vehicle settings menu on the infotainment screen, under vehicle information (on Seals sold in Europe)
- Registration document, import paperwork, or dealer’s sales invoice

There is no single global authority tracking recalls across every market where the Seal is sold. Each region applies its own framework:
- China (home market): the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) administers recalls under the country’s defective-product recall rules. BYD has issued China-market recalls on other models (Tang and Yuan Pro, in a 2025 campaign); no Seal-specific recall has been reported through SAMR as of this writing.
- European Union and UK: the Seal falls under EU type-approval and UK vehicle safety rules, with recall notices issued through national transport authorities (the DVSA in the UK) and BYD’s local importer.
