About the Subaru Outback

The Outback started life in 1994 as a raised, body-clad trim of the Legacy wagon, sold in Japan as the “Legacy Grand Wagon” and everywhere else as the Legacy Outback. Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

Unlike some brands that put the engine code at position 8, Subaru puts it at position 6 (confirmed by decoding real VINs from every generation); position 8 instead encodes restraint systems on most Outback model years. Position 7 is a trim/package character that varies year to year and is best read through a full decode rather than memorized.

Position 9: Check digit

A math-validated character calculated from the other 16 using a fixed weighting formula and modulo-11 arithmetic. Change any other character and the check digit stops matching, catching typos.

Position 10: Model year

The cycle repeats every 30 years, so a 1st-gen 1997 Outback also carries a “V” at position 10, the same character due back on a 2027 model. I, O, and Q are never used, since they can be confused with 1 and 0. Pair position 10 with the chassis code at position 5 to remove any ambiguity about which cycle you’re reading.

Position 11: Assembly plant

A single character narrows the VIN to a specific factory and, on older Outbacks, the transmission fitted. Decoding real VINs across generations turned up:
