Positions 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier

Unlike some brands that put the engine code at position 8, Subaru puts it at position 6 (confirmed by decoding real VINs from every generation); position 8 instead encodes restraint systems on most Outback model years. Position 9: Check digit

The cycle repeats every 30 years, so a 1st-gen 1997 Outback also carries a “V” at position 10, the same character due back on a 2027 model. I, O, and Q are never used, since they can be confused with 1 and 0. Pair position 10 with the chassis code at position 5 to remove any ambiguity about which cycle you’re reading.
Position 11: Assembly plant
